What Makes a 'Good' Domino Setup?

I often get asked the question, "what makes a good domino project?" with the expectation of a precise, concrete answer. But the reality is that domino setups, like all art, are impossible to categorically define as "good" or "bad." In this video, I wanted to share my thoughts on this, and hear back from you!

One could say that there is no "right way" of doing anything... there is only the right way FOR YOU. What are your thoughts though? Do you agree, or disagree... and why? Is there such thing as a "good" domino setup?

There exists these quality standards that have been followed by the community for years - balance, pacing, cohesion to name a few. But for no reason do these have to be followed. And sometimes trying to follow these guidelines can be limiting and stressful. My take is that someone should only follow these norms if they’re trying to please other people with their work. Something like your personal record setup may have been absolutely astounding to the entire community, but you’ve made it quite clear that that’s not what your main goal was. Your intentions were to please yourself, and as a result, you were incredibly satisfied with the turnout. I hope that the community can understand and not bash the videos that don’t meet the standard expectations. Often times they have their own unique beauty to them.

Thank you for making this video, Lily. I really appreciate this viewpoint on domino videos.

Awesome video!! I really loved watching the collaboration with you and some other famous domino builders! It would be so cool if you could host a huge collab video where the whole domino community can participate in!

This was an excellent way to not answer a question for which there is no answer. 😀 You know if a setup is good when you see it. But there's some elements that can be used to make setups better, like tricks, structures, surprise effects, colour combinations and other things. But none of it does automatically make it good. I guess it's experience and developing a feeling of what it might look like when toppling that makes you over time be able to plan out better and better setups. 🙂

Lily, the very best thing about art it that the artist is not personally bound by "the rules". Rules stifle creativity. Without creativity there can be no art. Or technology. How many things that we use every day were invented because some dummy didn't know the rules said it couldn't be done and went ahead and did it. And always remember, when creating there are no failures. If nothing else, we succeed in learning what doesn't work and why.

Man, this video made me think a lot about domino setups, and I really loved your insight on this topic! Everything you said made lots of sense, and I really agree! I personally dont think there is a "good setup" because its different for everyone and some people could think different things are good like you said in the video. I think there are setups that are better than others, but theres no definitive good setup". I like some setups a lot more than others, but other people would have a different opionion, so there wouldnt be a setup that is for sure a good setup. I personally like setups that are compact, with good colour combos and include various tricks. A good example of someone who does this very well is Twig. However, someone else could think differently

I think that there is not a thing like good setup, I think that there are two types of setups : Creative setup and a Non - Creative setup.A Non - Creative setup is a setup which has not such creativity like you said a domino line but like for a beginner it was a hard task.Creative setup includes many tricks and creative ideas and usually only experienced people can do it and it also is hard to make

Love from India ❤️ 🙏(Namaste)

Based on what you said and me not being a builder, I would say there are good elements. A really cool trick and especially one that does what it is supposed to helps make a good setup.

This was a unexpected video but I still enjoyed it!

What a great insight! It's all subjective to the builder... that totally makes sense and I agree.

I was actually going to try for the worlds longest domino line in January, when I will have
over 15, 524 dominoes. I would consider that a huge accomplishment, because it’s a world record, but yes, it is pretty boring to watch. I would also consider that there is a type of good setup for the skill that you’re at. Like if you posted a line with six dominoes, I problem wouldn’t consider that a good setup. But if I build a 25, 000 domino setup with no fails and cool tricks, that would be an amazing setup.

There is also no “right way” of building. Some people like my building style, and others don’t. My way of building is good to me, because that’s how I think my setups look good.

I like the series so far, and I also like how you ask to answer questions. Bye!

I agree that a "good" setup is subjective, but it always comes down to the right color distribution and the domino tricks density/spread within the overall project. And a "AMAZING AWESOME SUPER RAINBOW SPIRAL MUST WATCH" type of video is not my favorite style per se. I would say that I my case I was a bit constrained in the amount of dominoes and space I had to maintain improving on these two aspects.

In my opinion the best domino channels are the ones who have their own unique style. Here are some examples (my opinions):

Best tricks / Most innovative:
Flippy Cat
Wdomino
Scorpion Dominoes
22DOMINOES22

Best colour themes:
The Dominoes Bros
Plaksin Productions
Bpdoles

Best domino fields:
TheDominoKing

Best domino fall walls:
DomiNoah

Best structures:
MarDominoes

Best compact setups:
Twig

Best hybrid setups:
Flash Domino

And of course, the representative of the domino community, the most popular domino YouTuber, and the overall most exciting domino builder, the one and only Hevish5!

So I think that the best domino setup, is a setup including what the builder does best!

I'm just from Green Turtle XD

For me, there is 2 types of setups: GOOD but RISKY or NOT so GOOD but RELIABLE.
GOOD DOMINO BUILDER is MIXING these 2 TYPES of setups.
