The fact that BoA has been an idol longer than Winter has been alive trips me up so much. The fact that both of them can stand on equal footing to perform without getting criticism for their ages or experience is incredible.

Despite the lyrics I can’t help but love this song for the crunchy instrumentals

I watched and listened to step back on New Years eve night, with multiple drinks in me lol; it legit felt like a religious experience. The song has not left my playlist since. I understand why people are turned off by it, cause it is indeed creepy sounding, and its sooo bass heavy, but ma lord it slaps so hard for me. Makes me want to fight in a battle or something idk

Juyoung’s reaction is mine when GOT the beat was announced. XD

Step Back is such an interesting trip. I remember being really hyped when they performed this song during the free SM online concert and when the official stage video was released. The bizarre chant at the beginning makes the song incredibly eerie, but it gives the feeling of intimidation before an epic showdown, which does fit the message of the song. And the vocals were exquisite, though the lyrics could have been about telling the haters and the anti-fans to step back rather than a possessive girlfriend telling other women to step back from her man. All these women have endured extremely unnecessary criticism in their careers as K-Pop idols and the lyrics easily could have reflected that.

I hope we get another song from GOT the beat in the future, especially one with more empowering lyrics like Girls on Top by BoA. There’s a lot of potential for a comeback at any time since unlike SuperM, they don’t need to worry about military service. Plus, GOT the beat has idols from *all four* K-Pop generations and idols from all the current female SM artists (though I wish f(x) could have been here too T^T). To do only one song and completely forget about this supergroup would be such a missed opportunity.

Umu the editing for this is truly top tier😭😭 it made me tear up just thinking about the older videos and how much this channel has really grown and evolved. Thank you for all the hard work you do and i hope you know it does not go unnoticed that quality also means time and effort (and you’ve obviously put a lot of both into all of your videos)

I think the spooky sample and the collection of 1-4 gen gg members lends itself AMAZINGLY well to a female vampire concept. When they release an MV they can avoid the backlash from the misogynist lyrics by having the GOT members fight over a man for his blood as vampires rather than for "love".

From the moment the orchestral-like singing came in the beginning, I knew they were about to tap into their belting bags lol. It really set the tone for the churchy, almost-haunted tone of the whole song. I enjoy it sometimes, but other times, I'm terribly reminded of the sparseness in the song; just depends on my mood.
Also, Glitch up next,

"Ooh, that's a voice" - still patiently waiting for them to react to more Wendy, after they praised her so much for her solo work T.T

Considering how controversial the lyrics are, I think the way the music was done was absolutely on purpose. Now that it's being mentioned that the end bit just sounds so weird, creepy and eerie, when taking a look at the lyrics it makes a whole world of sense as to why the song itself is like that. The lyrics are basically about a girl telling another girl to step back from her man otherwise she's gonna get really nasty if she doesn't and using that weird creepy section in different parts of the song makes it make the first girl's words seem more... threatening I think. It's been a while since I looked at the lyrics and thought about this song so I could be wrong, but from a general standpoint, I think it makes some more sense to me now. Did I wish that this song was more about something more empowering rather than what it is? Yeah, but we can't have everything in the world unfortunately.

Despite the lyrics, we all can't really deny how top-tier the production for this song was. SM really is the blueprint for k-pop, fight me. 😜

4:22 That is indeed A VOICE, Raffi :) ... You've both previously reacted to her solo debut song 'Like Water' (also the live version) last year and were super impressed with her singing !

ive always loved the creepy sounds on this song and the vocals are top tier too! tho i do understand people hating the lyrics, but why cant u take on the persoective like they’re the villains in the story? idk ive always felt like this was a villain song, especially with that bg instrumental

Also I have no idea if this connects to the « churchy » sound in the chords but in SM’s New Years show they said GOT (갓) was a play-on-words of/sounded like God and referenced the ensemble’s godly talents? Correct me if I’m wrong lol that’s just what I remember

I LOVE THIS SONG bc of the beat mostly. Like the eerie-ness scratches my brain in the best way and it gives me hunted house/carousel vibes. Their vocals are also strong to the point of it being aggressive and kinda like punchy. The sassiness too of the raps just made it better 😩

The girl in the black sweater losing her shit thru the entire video over BoA and hyotae is such a vibe, so relatable
