Restoration Of Roman Gladius Legionnaire

Hi! Today, the restoration of the Roman gladius, the sword. Sure, this is a replica of the XX-XXI century. The condition is average. There is rust. The handle is not the same as it should be in the original. And there are also no pads for the handle. I start to restore. I want to note that the subject is not mine. And all the changes that I will make to this work, they are confirmed by the owner of this item.

The first thing I did was to take the gladius hilt apart. And then put the iron parts and the sword itself in a rust remover. The wooden parts of the sword I sanded the guard and realized that it had a completely different shape. Not the way it should be in the original. I removed the lower pommel and discarded it, because the gladius pommel was spherical. Further, after I cleaned the blade, I sanded it, but at the same time left an interesting pattern of my own on the surface of the blade.

The blade of the blade was uneven. I corrected it and made it smooth. I turned the handle for the gladius on a lathe machine from dry walnut wood. I have adjusted the sword guard to the original version.
The shape that was originally in the original. Next, to plant a new spherical pommel, I added a new piece of shank and lengthened it, cut a new thread. To use the new handle, I had to remove the parts on the sides on the shank and put a new handle on.
I used medium-thick leather for the pads between the handles and the blade. The details of the handle, except for the handle itself, I covered with a primer. To paint them further. Primer, then acrylic paint and primer again. After polishing, the final layers of paint are white.

As for the scabbard. I used dry larch wood, cut out the desired shape, glued it, then processed the scabbard and pasted it with natural brown leather. I made the accessories of the gladius scabbard from millimeter brass, and also used engraving and etching for a small decoration of the scabbard details.
After that, I did the blade test for you, as usual. Please don't forget to share this video. Thanks!

Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

Three things I adore about this episode...
#1 The Almost original Legionnaire armour.
#2 A very nearly hygienic neutralising receptacle.
#3 and the scary look to camera while filing.
This is REAL life choices of a creative genius..thanks for thinking like us...

Amazing how you restored the replica of a Roman gladius. It looks much better and it cuts like a knife. You also made a new scabbard for the sword and it looks almost like an original one made for it. Excellent work. I hope the owner likes the restoration job.

Alex. I could spend another 67 years trying to learn your talents, and I would only "JUST" be where you are now! You fascinate us with what you can do! One quick queastion, did you notice the wobble in the wood handle you turned? Will this not throw off the striking? Yes we know it is a customers private tool, just thought I would ask! Stay safe my friend! Bob and Teresa

Mr. Alex, here in the United States we are soon to have our Thanksgiving holiday. I wish to express my thanks and gratitude for coming across your channel. I am thankful you are not afraid to show us when things do not go according to plan, we forget a step, or when you have an injury. I am also a member of the tape bandage in the finger society. I am glad that you show us that wonderful things can be accomplished in a small shop that has more or less the same tools a neighbor may have. Some neighbors have fancier tools or tools i may need to have help with to complete a project, but the important thing is the generosity of crafting friends. May your house be filled with fortune, blessings, and great health!

I have to say that was amazing to watch, but it wasn’t a truly Roman replica, but rather Georgian version, which was a wonderful piece!🌞
