99biff was right in his comment. I think he meant Triangle OXA is a right triangle with X as right angle. it follows that OA > OX being OA as hypotenuse. Then by looking at the diagram OA > OX because of the fact that X is outside the circle compared to A that is on the circle which only concludes that OX > OA, which contradicts OA>OX, therefore angle OXA cannot be the right angle of triangle OXA.

can you prove the statement without an indirect proof argument/proof by contradiction?

The theorem is a biconditional so wouldn't you need to prove it the other direction too?
