I did this about three years ago, but I used a GameCube style thumbstick.

Im an avid fan of the n64 pad, but even replacing the stick affects the feel of the stick. Hyperkins admiral controller has a modern stick, and is the 3 prong design. I bought it about 4 yrs ago, and its been the only n64 controller i use.

I used to fix N64 controller sticks back in the day. When you open the thumb stuck part there are 2 arches, one for vertical and one for horizontal and the back of the thumb stuck went in the middle. Over time those arches wore out and the back of the stick was no longer tight against them. I would take the arches and heat the plastic with a lighter and squeeze them tighter again. I would make them feel nearly new again.

For those of you that don’t already know, this will only work with first party controllers. If it’s third party, you need to have a third party analog stick, and you have to solder the wires. Me and my uncle found this out the hard way.

You can also pick ones up that have been modeled after the GameCube joy stick they are actually fairly cheap and just as easy to install plus on top of it the stick will never have that dead zone again with the original n64 one it will start to have that dead zone after some playtime with it
