I've got a 1992 D250 Cummins and it's around 310K miles right now. I love my old truck.

I like the fact that he said that the reason it lasted was because of the maintenance and not just simply because it’s a Cummins.

900k + miles that's just awesome from a truck. you could not ask for better

Use your exhaust brake all the time with these trucks. It keeps the innards of the turbo sliding freely and not getting gummed up with soot.

I agree the Cummins engines are great, I own one with 148, 000 miles on it. The only issues I have with the truck is everything that Cummins did not make. Shame Cummins don't make the entire truck.

I started with a 1989 12-valve in a W250 that I ran for 21 years. Sold in 2 hours of the ad posting. The Cummins engine preserved the resale value. I currently have a 2006 Ram 2500 4X4 quad cab with the 325hp high output common rail 5.9 engine. It currently has 217, 000 miles and runs perfect. I run fully synthetic oil. Fantastic engine!

Hard to beat driving a diesel. Owned a gas pickup for a few years and there's no way I could go back now.

+Braxton Sorensen No need to go to the dealer. The brake light and abs light might just be low brake fluid. The transmission shift problem is your governor solenoid. It's a big problem with a easy and cheap fix. A new larger governor solenoid is about $50-$60 bucks or you can go all out and get a heavy duty GM solenoid for $190ish. All you have to do is drop your pan and remove the solenoid and replace it with a new one. While you are down there get a new filter and/or new deep pan and/or 3-4 accumulator spring. I replaced all those including the pressure transducer. Lastly tighten up the kickdown band and rear band. All this can be done with simple hand tools.

I just got a 2014 Ram Cummings 2months ago. Its my first diesel in a pickup. I know big truck diesels since I'm a truck driver for 25 years. Something to know, all semi trucks are inline six, none are v-8. The reason is inline engines last twice as long, well four times as long then a v-8 design. Its a balance design v design works against each other by pushing dead pistons up, inline uses the crank in tandem thus work with each other.. Also as you have pointed out, diesels need to be maintain to perform. Semi trucks hold 12 gallons of oil so they can go 25k, my 6.7 holds 3 gallons, so I'm thinking 12k. Manual says 15k,

Every diesel engine in pickups has to have this fluid now days if its a newer diesel with the emissions junk, not just cummins.

You can also get a high milage license plate frame from Chrysler. I's pretty nice, cast pewter and made in the USA. Got em on my hemis. BTW plenty of upgrades for the Dodge transmissions. If you raise the line pressure, they will last fine. Love to have a Cummins, but I'll keep driving a hemi unless I win the lottery.

Nothing sounds better than an exhaust break, especially in regen mode, turbo just spools like no other and is so loud!

I have one of those engine brakes and it is awesome. However it is not quiet. It is real easy to tell when the computer has turned it on, from both the braking and the noise.
