The reason they have to drive through all these oddball locations is that the gang sabotaged the entire traffic control system of the city, making all the traffic lights malfunction and causing an immense jam. That enables them to escape.

RIP Tony Beckley, he was the brilliant actor who played Camp Freddie.
He was often cast as cold ruthless characters but according to his friend Sheila Hancock he was the opposite.
He gave a memorable performance as Peter The Dutchman in Get Carter.
His final role was in An Inspector Calls before his death in Los Angeles at the age of 50.
A fine actor who always gave eye-catching portrayals.
