First Minister Of Wales Vaughan Gething Loses Vote Of No Confidence Tabled By Tories

Vaughan Gething, the embattled First Minister of Wales, has lost a vote of no confidence tabled by the Welsh Conservatives.

The motion follows the collapse of the co-operation deal between Labour and Plaid Cymru and a series of rows involving Mr Gething.

He lost the vote on his leadership in the Senedd on Wednesday, with 29 votes against him to 27 for.

Mr Gething was visibly emotional and could be seen wiping tears from his eyes as the motion was debated.

Continuing after you've lost a confidence vote is just wrong in all but the most extreme of cases. It's a selfish thing to do, because he's now a lame duck clinging to office, and with any effectiveness he did have, diminished. He should salvage his dignity, and grab the consolation prize as at least being seen as doing what was best for the people of Wales. If he has to be figuratively dragged out kicking and screaming, that's what he'll be forever remembered for.
