Great video and comparison. Picked up a 7900xt and have been very happy with it so far... and as a bonus, it came with starfield, which I was going to buy anyway, so it really helped me justify my purchase. Ray tracing is cool and all, but I don't really feel like I am missing much. THe frame generation stuff might matter more as the card ages a bit, but hopefully the adrenaline drivers will continue to mature and help the card last me several years. It's so good in fact that I am thinking about upgrading from a regular 1440p monitor to an ultrawide.... but thats a whole different beast.

My only regret now is that maybe I should have just forked over the extra money for a 7900xtx, but i just coouldn't swallow the almost 900$ price they were going for when i bought my card about a month back.

Anyhow, thanks for the great video.

At $750, I'm in agreement with your conclusion. Thanks for the revisit!

What a great resource this is - packed with info Dominic. I hope to see more of these here, you always do very accurate reviews with a lot of data man

A great comparison. I was on the fence with these two but putting all the pros and cons side by side the 7900xt is just a 1440p beast. Plus, 20gb of vram for a £750 card is hard to ignore. Also, the fact that FSR3 is just around the corner makes the 7900xt a no brainer, for me at least.

Like you said, if only Nvidia would have put 16gb of vram on the 4070 ti, I'd still be on the fence now. But as it is, I'd rather pay less for more.

When I got my 7900xt, it was because I wanted a card that would last me 3-5 years. My last card became more and more obsolete, primarely because of the 8 gb vram.
I just don't see 12 gb vram keeping me in the clearfor more then 2 years, 3 at the most.
On the other hand, in my contry, the 7900xt would be closer to a 4080 in pricing. I still went with AMD, as my last amd card lasted me a good 4 1/2 years

ended up picking up the 7900 xt. 20 gb of vram for less money was a pretty easy choice.

I have the XFX RX 7900 XT Black - which is clocked at over 2700mhz with no problems and works with my old 750W Corsair PSU using the original cables. Paired with a 5800x3d, it's a killer combo! Much better than the AMD reference card.

I can tell you this, when I play Hogwarts Legacy maxxed out at 4K on my RX 7900 XTX; I routinely see more than 12GB of VRAM being used (I specifically remember 12, 387MB at one point). At this price tier, 16GB is the BARE MINIMUM, especially considering that the RX 6800 XT has it for only $500.00, a trend that will continue with the RX 7800 XT.

I can only imagine how much better the 7900 XT will age over the next 2-4 years with 66% more Vram

Excellent review. The RX 7900XT should have launched at 750 GBP.

Would love to see these kinds of tests with all their technologies enabled, like FSR and DLSS

Indeed I had serious trouble choosing between these two just a few weeks ago. Spent days researching. Depending on AiB brand, prices can get really close.
Since I game at 1440p and casually use some upscaling and RT in single player games, they were kind of the same on average. Eventually I got Nvidia for the power. No air conditioning here, also hate noise. Got one, undervolted it right away and now it's even less than 200W, silent, with just a small hit to performance. Couldn't care less about a few FPS. But it was really close and hard to pick.

I know like a lot of others, Im going to team red this time. I'm still using the gtx 1080 which was a beast at the time, and is still pretty good for medium settings at 1440 and 1080 for modern titles. I just can't justify spending money on a 4070 ti for less performance, less Vram (which we all know modern games require more and more of) and just the fact Nvidia have slapped it's loyal customers in the face with these price increases. Not to forget, the 4070ti was originally a 4080 lol

Great video and comparison, thank you! Guys, always do consider undervolting you 7900 series GPU for a much higher efficiency.

I bought my 4070TI in january, the 7900XT was around $900+VAT and the 7900XTX was sold out, so it was a no brainer for 1440p gaming at that time. I prefer DLSS image quality over FSR and I haven't run into VRAM issues yet. If you play in 4K and don't use RT that often, the 7900XT is a better deal now for $750.

Nice to see these cards are getting into reasonable pricing territory. Still a bit high though.

so much detail Dominic - must have taken a lot of time - its a good market to target, its about the only semi realistic price point ./ performance there is now with current gen. Id love to see something on the 2080-3080-4080 as there are quite a lot of deals now on the older generation which means there should be plenty of life in them yet - but what do we gain from newer models etc?

The 7900 Xt is easily availble less than the 4070 ti, would be interesting with just a slight undervolt how the efficiency would change.

I really wish the 4070 series came with 16GB and the 4060 series came with 12GB.
I suspect that the 4070Ti is already having problems in some games at 1440p ultra/rt setting when you play them long enough.

I've seen videos where a problematic title works fine at 1080p on an 8GB card for 30 minutes and then starts having issues with missing textures or massive frame rate drops
This type of issue isn't likely to show up in a normal review, but will show up in normal gaming.
I haven't seen any videos demonstrating this with a 4070, but I've seen forum complaints about this issue with 12GB cards at 1440p or 4k/DLSS.
The issues go away if VRAM use is reduced with lower settings or if you save the game and restart at the save point whenever the problem occurs.

This does seem to be buggy VRAM management code in new games rather than an actual fault with 12GB cards, but its a real problem for anyone who wants to play at ultra settings.
