You couldn’t do much better than the second Star Wars and Star Trek films. ❤

The part of the movie that changed special effects is curiously not shown in this video. The Genesis Sequence, where Dr. Carole Marcus describes what Genesis can do while a computer generated visual simulation plays is the first sequence in a motion picture entirely accomplished within CGI visuals. The sixty second sequence took some nine months to complete, and its use of fractals was revolutionary.

I also saw this at the Hwy 64 Drive Inn. The first one. Back around in 79. Star Wars came. Out 77. I was 8 years old in 77. This was golden age for the best sci-fi movies. I miss the drive-inns. Families could have picnics outside.

The Enterprise leaving space dock really gives a sense of size and bulk of the ship. It's slow, it often has the viewer up close and personal as she gets underway. Most movies go for speed or for a full frame shot, where the ship is entirely within the frame. While you see the whole ship, it leaves much to be desired of feeling how big it is. Star Wars uses this type of shot often. Also, when it's moving, it's doing so quickly. Whereas here, the shots show movement of something that's big and heavy, needing time to get up to speed.

Ahem, you had one job: showing the Genesis Effect animation, the only bit of the movie that really "changed special effect forever".

That was Spock trolling Kirk. Bros for life.

I think the effects in Wrath of Khan were a clear step down from The Motion Picture but the CG Genesis effect was revolutionary.

All those scenes were taken from the movie that actually changed special effects for ever.

I was 10 years old when I saw this movie in 1982 at the Starlight Drive In movie theater. Mad Max 2: the Road Warrior was the double feature. On the tailgate of a big green Ford station wagon.

They took the enterprise out for "training cruise", it looked all cleaned, shiny and Kirk brings it back in Star Trek 3 all beat up and looked like crap

Wow, you really messed up on this one. Yes, the Genesis demonstration video changed visual effects forever. But the sequence you show here at the beginning is not only NOT a landmark moment in effects -- all the space shots you see in the launch sequence are taken from Star Trek -- The Motion Picture. They weren't even filmed for this movie, but for the previous one.

I hated the lack of continuity of effects different speeds had on the ship from first movie to second movie. In the first movie it was obviously the same scene of enterprise leaving space dock. But when kirk did that scene he gave order for thrusters at station keeping. Then when he wanted sulu to take the ship out he simply said thrusters ahead mr sulu, take us out. The later after they were out of harms way he gave order to go to impulse ahead warp .5. And when he did the ship zoomed away away so fast the earth faded into the distance quickly. I don't claim to know exactly how fast warp .5 is, but my logical thinking says warp .5 is 1/2 impulse. So when she gave the order for 1/4 impulse the ship should have shot out like a cannon in my opinion

Wait Star Trek is the movie that changed Special Effects forever or did its franchise change that????

I just realized that Savik refers to Admiral Kirk as Captain and not Admiral at the 2:48 mark. Weird.
