5. James Dalton Highway

If you're wary of bad omens, how about the fact that this dirt road from Fairbanks to Alaska stretches for exactly 666 kilometers? Also called the Haul Road, this highway is notorious for the high winds coming from the Brooks Range mountains. With only a single fuel stop on the highway, bringing survival supplies is pretty much a necessity when traveling down the James Dalton Highway. Fortunately, the road is so isolated from the civilization that the fatality rate ends up being less than one per year.

4. Eshima Ohashi Bridge

While it might be just 1.7 kilometers long, the Eshima Ohashi bridge can still scare an unsuspecting driver. The main reason for that lies in its steepness – with a gradient of 6.1% on one side and 5.1% on the other, this bridge is certainly a unique sight. The bridge has been designed so that boats and fishing ships can pass underneath. Known as the 'rollercoaster bridge', the Eshima Ohashi connects the cities of Sakaiminato and Matsue over Lake Nakaumi.

3. The Himalayan Road

With an altitude of over 11,000 feet, the Himalayan road stands tall as one of the highest roads in the world. Being etched into the mountains, this road is so narrow that it doesn't allow for two vehicles to pass at the same time. Unfortunately, this dusty one-lane road is quite important in the grand scheme of things; as a bypass between Tibet and India, the Himalayan road serves an important function for the locals.

2. Trollstigen

This Norway-based mountain road consists of eleven hairpin bends and numerous narrow passes. When you add the steep incline of 10%, it's no wonder this road has been nicknamed the 'troll ladder'. While the road has recently been widened, particularly long vehicles are still prohibited from driving on it. Despite its obvious danger and the fact it is responsible for an annual fatality rate of 208, the Trollstigen remains a very popular tourist attraction.

1. Stelvio Pass

Speaking of mountain passes, the Stelvio Pass is officially the highest paved road in the Eastern Alps. Standing at over a whopping 9,000 feet at its peak, this road is undeniably one of the most scenic drives you can find. However, with its incredible 48 hairpin bends, countless 180-degree corners and low concrete barriers, the Stelvio Pass routinely punishes every wrong move. Due to the fact that winter brings additional troubles, it's no surprise that this road is only open to public from June to September each year. If you ask us, better to stay off it altogether and appreciate those beautiful vistas from afar.
