Honestly do it for fun. The money will come later

I'm fairly new to music production (about a year) and I'm so critical of my work, but my wife is my biggest fan she supports me in my purchases and she'll sit in with me like a groupie lol while I work and I find her humming my work and that does it for me. I'm having fun, and when I feel uninspired I remix some of my favorite songs and it gets me going.

Completely agree but here is the thing, if you don't try you never know. Another important thing is the mental health, once you get in to anything that involves creating/producing, things will start to change for some people, for example some individuals become nerds and loses their social life others develops anxiety etc..It definetly changed me in some ways, made me nerdy and some other stuff even though I don't do it full time and I don't have the pressure. So beware of this.
Jon is being super realistic and little pessimistic but I understand why because he is right about a lot of things about the music ind. My opinion, everyone is different, so some people will take 5 years to learn all these and some others will learn in couple of months plus make decent tracks( For me, I learned very quick and my fav tracks were the ones that I made first lol) Everything he says that you need to know can be learned by actually doing it but you have to start somewhere instead of asking yourself if you could do it. I personally developed good ears and learned all the technical side of it but when it comes to sit and make the tracks, I lack of inspiration and sometimes I cannot sit more than an hour(I blame my real world problems).
This is only the musical part and there is the other half, making in the music industry. That is another huge topic to me and that brings a lot of new challenges and honestly some people can't handle these so called challenges.. My final opinion is, do it for fun and for love, the rest will come along. If you want to start, start today and don't worry about tomorrows issues. Good luck everyone!

"Don't ever let someone tell you, you can't do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they want to tell you you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period."

That's the difference between winners and losers. A lot of people are doing things because of the money and that's a mistake. In my case I have a job as a personal trainer and still don't give up in my dream of becoming a successful Music producer. I do it because I always loved electronic music and always wanted to create my own. Practice makes perfect and you need to believe in yourself because no one will believe in you more than yourself.

Man, I'm sat in a coffee shop with a speaker next to me so I couldn't listen.... I sat and read the subtitles for the whole video and man everything you said is so true. SO much of yourself goes into this path! In those days of doubt I remind myself that it's not about how much money, success or followers... it's about who you BECOME in the process. Awesome video Jon and keep going bro you're doing really great!

I don‘t really understand your point when you say the first 3-5 years making music nobody will support anything and it will sound like shit. I see so many producers getting supports very early and even I had 3 label releases in only 2 years that actually made me money, even if its just 20 euros but I earned something from what I created. So your argument is very discouraging for producers in my opinion, if you tell them right in the beginning that they will only make shit in 5 years, many will actually lose motivation as soon as they hear that.

Some things that make producing easier and more fun to me:
1. treat it as a hobby. Do it for fun. Nothing more. It will take a long time to develop all the skills.
2. Don‘t invest in anything at first. Start with free DAW software. Some people want to try it but are just overwhelmed and won‘t understand the software. You can buy a pro DAW later and you get into the software quickly.
3. Only invest the money that you actually can and want to spend.
4. Cooperate with others. Find people that produce and do stuff with them. I do sound design challenges with a friend or participate in game jams.
5. learn to appreciate your skills. At the beginning projects from one month ago will sound like shit. But that also means that you are more advanced and skilled than one month ago and can identify your mistakes.
6. Hardware inspires - software does not. You want to turn those physical synth knobs. Even basic midi controllers are awesome for trying new things.

I hope that helps some people wondering if they should start producing :)

So it all depends what the dream is! The reality is hours and hours and hours and hours spent in the studio working on beats, basses, leads, sound design, arrangement, song writing, learning how to use plug-ins properly, how to mix down, understanding EQ compression limiting, how to use a desk, learn automation etc etc no one gets paid while they learn anything in fact most people have to pay tens of thousands of pounds to go to university and this is exactly the same thing only learning at home with various levels of information coming to you from various sources. However I do believe that if you are talented and you write in certain genre and understand the genre intimately and are able to add something to the scene which is unique and which people like then hopefully you will be successful.

Making great music is difficult and doing it consistently track after track after track is also a tough gig. The main thing is to love what you do and be passionate about it if the success comes with money that’s not up to you but your audience. Be very careful of managers because my experiences they are all completely shit. Better to do your own promotional work, networking, management.

What a refreshingly honest view, in stark contrast to all those out there promoting 'special sauce' secret ingredients that will propel you to stardom tomorrow. Most of the people claiming they can tell u how to become a success are themselves struggling otherwise they'd be far too busy making money from actual production. Think about it; you never see some successful busy business person with a PROPER business downing tools to stop and come find u to tell u how you can do what they do. I make music for fun, the rest of the time I build waterfalls to make a good living.

I like your honest and true message. I am a self-producing artist, and I can relate to every thing you said. But I am still continuying. I don't see what else I could do. Keep on your good work! :)
