I had been wanting to get into film photography but was intimidated by film. I researched the best 35 film camera for beginners and came up with just the perfect one. I was able to nail the exposure using the light meter thanks to the ease of use of the Canon ae-1. This experience really got me into analog photography. In this video I show you some of the first rolls I took using Kodak Ultramax 400.

Years ago for Christmas I got a Pentax K-1000. No telling how many shots it's taken. Thousands +. I still have it

My first ever camera was an AE-1. I bought it in 1985. I never sold it, I gave it to a relative in 2018. I have been a Nikon shooter since 2010 or so, and stopped shooting film in 2004 or so. The AE-1 is hands down the best film camera I have ever used, and the best camera I've ever owned besides my current Z8.

This video is a great resource for anyone about to take the plunge for the first time. I'm lucky to have started with film back when there only was film :)

This video is perfect for starting out. I just shot my first roll in the canon ae-1. I hope my photos turn out okay.

Another great video Cielo and great advice for anyone wanting to venture into film cameras. Although I am a digital camera lover now, I still have my old film cameras from my early days doing photography. I was a Minolta fan in 35mm, and a Norita fan in 2 1/4 inch film. I do get tempted to do some film stuff again ... maybe one day.

For the first camera I would recommend something semi-automatic that has aperture priority, so you only need to worry about setting the aperture you want and focusing. My favourite is Nikon FA.

How about the canon A1? Is that a good beginner camera?

Personally I would buy a "modern" film camera to start out, $200 is not cheap, you can pick up a canon 300v, arguably one of the best entry level slr's ever made, for about £30, which is around $40. It has auto everything for complete beginners all the way to some seriously high tech stuff, it's auto focus system is brilliant as well. Paying $200 for a very old camera that does basically nothing as your first experience with film is not a good idea in my opinion and this is coming from someone who started with a fujica AZ-1..
