Amazing work all around. Great camera. Had the G1 with the 45 and 28. Ultimately switched to the Hexar RF. Purely just MF vs. AF reasons.

I got my G2 almost 2 years ago and it easily became one of my favorite camers from my collection. I also use the 28mm and 45mm and can agree with you that these Zeiss lens are incredibly sharp. Only thing about my G2 is that the view finder is a little Hazy wich is typical on these Contax cameras. I don't know if you are aware but the G2 can also shoot at 1/6000 sec in Auto mode if it needs too. I do also own a Leica M7 and when I first bought I had a Voightlander Nocton 35mm and the Contax was easily sharper than my Leica with the Voightlander. It wasn't until I got a Summicron 35mm ASPH that it mad a huge diffrence on the Leica. The Summicron is now as sharp as the Contax but much slower to shoot with the manual focus. Great Video!

I have had a "borrowed" G2 for a long time, (friend lent it to me and I asked him a million times if he wanted it back). I have no idea why I don't shoot with it all the time. The lenses are like, the best lenses. Just all amazing. If you can get a hold of the 21mm to try, it's freaking awesome.

Almost more helpful than a technical review because the way you relate form factor to the results you are able to capture is something I have always felt when choosing a camera but didn't know quite how to explain. been using the g1 for about a year now and hands down it has produced the nicest images on film for me !! the 28 and 45 are the sharpest and cleanest lenses i’ve ever used

I shoot two Contax G1 bodies with 21/28/45/90mm Zeiss lenses.
I also shoot a Leica M6 with 21/35/90mm lenses. The 35 is a Zeiss and the other two are Leitz lenses.
All produce high quality images.

Very nice review. Just picked a G2 (with the 2.8/28) up the other day, so I'm absorbing all I can on its quirks before I fire off the first frame. After all the research I'd done on various 35mm film body/lens combinations, this one fits my style far more than others I considered.

The G2 definitely lives up to the hype. The camera along with the Zeiss glass produce incredible images. I have the 45mm planar and each time I get scans back I'm always amazed at the sharpness and contrast. It really is a bargain considering the amount of $ you will spend to get something equivalent in the 35mm space. Thanks for the great review!

I have never been more terrified owning a camera than when I had a G2. Any Nikon you can trust will run forever, but each time I turned my G2 on I wasn’t completely sure if it was going to work properly.

Also had to calibrate the AF manually and wow was that a pain. But I never had AF issues after that.

At the time these were way ahead of their time. I have two of them, both of them broken with the same fault and no one can repair them. The quality of the images made by this camera is mainly due to the photographer and then tne Zeiss lenses, any film camera even a Leica is just a light tight box with a film transport. They are worth a lot of money because tbey are Contax.

Really like your videos!
I own a Contax G1 45mm for a few years now, always loved the output of the camera/lens. Also really love the double exposure builded-in option. And the G2 body is most certainly even better. My problem with the G1 was the autofocus consistency (I have heard the G2 is much better at that). But I would say even on G1, 8/10 of your shots will have a correct focus. So it is very easy to use.
The only problem with these cameras now is the durability, and the overall reliability. It's hard to fix, and the camera is very fragile sadly... My G1 has a pimple problem and doesn't drag the film correctly + a battery drain now.
I switched to a Leica MP, and I would say the image output are similar (a bit different in "style" I would say) but overall quality between zeiss biogon and summicrons are comparable. But the Leica, being all mechanical, wins the battle of reliability. The Contax is also cheaper of course.
That being said, I agree with all you said, and I will most likely like to shoot with both a Leica MP and a G2 in the future! :)
