Liberalism is the mother of dizzying improvements in human well-being. We have good reason, therefore, to be concerned that illiberalism is on the rise at both ends of an increasingly polarized society. What, then, is required of us if we are to reclaim and recommit to the liberal project? In one sense, liberalism is easy. Respect the rights of others. (Simple!) But liberalism is also deeply challenging — politically, intellectually, psychologically and culturally challenging. In this talk I will focus on what makes liberalism hard and what a community of scholars can do to attend to those challenges.
