As a video producer, I have to share huge files all of the time. And I've never been happy with the traditional file sharing services. I use one called Resilio Sync. Here's why...

Really like the cool studio look you have set up in the basement. A really solid look.

Thanks a lot! This is great. I just saw that Synology has an add-on for Resilio so I can run it on my Synology NAS :D

The biggest problem for me is that the receiver has to install the software to use the link sent to them. Most people I deal with are reluctant to do that. They simply want a link to download the file and nothing else.

As a Mac user I use MailDrop. Files up to 5GB in an emailed link. Saved up to one month (it is getting uploaded to a cloud server) up to 1TB of storage a month. All that is completely free. Sometimes I need to send individual files larger than 5GB which is the biggest downside for me.

Great video. Thanks for the suggestion! Liking the new studio too!

Audio mix is a bit soft compared to the average YT video.

Hi Doug... this sounds great. I wish to "Copy Paste" large Folders. Once they are Synced, can you break the sync and therefore they are independent of the originals? Any chance you can select a certain file type only? Thank you ... Steven

Doug,
We need to say when you share a folder, in the other side the computer need it the same space you are sharing in the original file. In my case I share an After effect project and its 1GB, the laptop in another side it cant open the folder because it don't have enough space. Regards.

Is this still free for personal use? Also, can it detect changes to the files such as amendments to csvs or excel files and that would cause it to sync?

It seems that your example was over LAN and not over the internet as Resilio Sync seems to perform similar to Tailscale + NFS + rsync or Tailscale + Syncthing. It is actually slower than using Tailscale + NFS + FreeFileSync.

I suppose this would be more convenient than sending my friend a magnet link to a private torrent i made. Sucks they need to have the software as well though.

What if I user delete a file in other end having the both read and write permission?

Will the file also be deleted from the source?

Big difference is this is not cloud storage hence your shared device have to ON always. That's let down for normal user.

Not storing the data on the cloud is a major negative to me. Might as well just self host a webserver or sftp server.

The advantages of going to the cloud is that it provides another backup of the video files. So if your shop burns down, you still have the client's video files.

As for security, just encrypt your files before you upload. Provide the software and keys to decrypt out of band.

I still haven't found a cheap cloud provider that is still fast and reliable. The last one I tried offered huge amounts of storage for cheap, but at the upload rates they provided it would take years to use that storages. I worked it out to something like 6 months to backup our current hard drive array. We ended up using that service just to backup our critical files and compressed video finals. Still took weeks to upload.

Edit: Also does Resilio work for clients with locked down work computers like government and education?

Sadly not quite compareble solution to cloud based solutions, because you can't turn off your pc unless someone isn't downloading anything. Also, downloading a software is not an option for sharing files for a client - at least usually. Like you said very suitable for co-work projects, and so on.
This is in the name, it's a sync software, not file sharing service.
Also, if you yourself have a bad connection, it will take long tine for the RX to get the files, even could be dropping out. Meanwhile going thru cloud, it is more reliable connection and your upload speed won't matter when the RX is downloading

You’ve got a strange idea about what “double charging” is. When you transfer a large file to someone else, they can download it directly to their home computer for free - but if they want to keep it in their own Dropbox account, of course they need to have an account with enough free space to store it. 🙄 Where is the double charge? Two people own cloud space, two people pay for cloud space.

By the logic you seem to be using, a restaurant is double-charging when you and your friend both order a chocolate milkshake? 🙄. You both get a chocolate milkshake, you both get a large file. Where is the difference?

No, no, no and no. Use Syncthing. Powerful and opensource.
