Axe-FX Standard (Any Good In 2021?)
The Fractal Audio Axe-FX Standard is nearing vintage status. Is it any good in these modern times where you can get all sorts of stuff. It used to be a real game changer, but the game has changed. Can it still hang with the big boys? What am I writing? I'll get me coat.
Enjoy!

People in 2009 - OMG it sounds exactly like any real amp...
People in 2021 - It sounds ok, but not like a real amp...
WTF?

these units are a bargain now on the used market. I have seen some less than £300. Might just grab one for home 🙂

Some of my fave bands' tones are from an old axe-fx. They hold up real well still and can be complimented with a preamp pedal if the drives are not up to someone's par. Hyvää tavaraa Elmo!

Great playing sir!
The answer is that most of us aren't good enough to even justify an Axe-Fx Standard. A 10W practice amp or no amp is what we need and it's good enough to learn and get better because ultimately that is the goal - developing our musicmanship. At your level I can understand why good gear is needed but it blows my mind why beginners or intermediate guitarists bother endlessly with gear rabbit holes. I've been in there. I've been playing for 15 years and wasted a lot of time on gear nonsense. An Axe-FX standard is more than enough to get to a great level. The fact is no one gives a shit, especially live.

Just figured out that I can copy and emulate all the sounds I ever loved to play my favorite stuff, it may still be worth for me. Cant wait to put my hands on one of these

Just noticed the depth of the scallops at first frets, that's deep!!I have currently scalloped a HB fusion and went a little too deep by accident but now feel reassured!!
As for the Fractal, it sounds great and I have a pod HD500X which I paid £140 and for that it is amazing (even if i just use it for delays/reverbs etc).
I am a great believer in getting equipment when they fall off the radar and cheap !
I can't see the point in chasing the latest tech and paying top dollar as I was paying £140 for an old Ibanez UE 300 (comp/OD and chorus) back in 1983 which is equivalent to about £600 now!!
My point being we are living in an age of amazing equipment for little money and do we REALLY need that extra processor or newest pro tools?
You do a BRILLIANT job in reviewing and maybe you could look at old tech?
By the way have you tried the Marshal Vintage Modern? I think it is the most underrated amp they ever produced! O rant over old boy, at ease!

This Guy really knows how to keep it real. I love that you aren't just a shill for the latest and greatest stuff.

with better IR's the older axe fx units still could sound really close to the real thing in a mix, but then again you need to convert the newer modern IR's from 3rd party companirs to syx

you melted the icy weather in Suomi with this unit.

Go to the global settings, set the input source to rear but still plug your guitar in the front - this makes the input high-cut filter away, your tones may sound a bit more brighter...and similar to the newer

needed an amp upgrade (for my trusty Roland Cube 30) but couldn't find something in budget with the flexibility/options I wanted... Suddenly realized used Axe-FX may be my best option!!

Elmo " I don't like extra gear" while sitting in front of a wall of gear, lol

they may not be the latest and greatest, but the Ultra and Standard are the price of a POD HD500X in 2011. You get so much value. I'm picking up an Ultra for $400

Great video my friend.
Hell, I like the old ADA preamps. I played the biggest gig of my life back in like 1990 with one and a Marshall Power amp and it sounded great. 🤣
I just looked on Reverb for used fractal and couldn't find a standard. Lots of Axe8 pedalboard modelers and axeFx2's and a few FM3s. I'm waiting on the axeFx8 pedal baord all in one to get inexpensive enough. One thing about fractal is they upgrade hardware all the time, so if you wait long enough you can get a good deal on what is considered outdated fractal stuff not supported maybe, but yet still pretty good.
I worked in the IT field and I hate using apps and the computer for musical products. Databases ok, spreadsheets, ok, etc, but I prefer amps and such just work with knobs and / or have the menus on the product so I can adjust as needed, etc, but I'm old and sick and cranky. 🤣
I've been very frustrated lately because I've not been able to play because of health problems and it's soooo frustrating. I used to play almost daily, and then there would be times I might not play a week or so, but then I would be right back at it again. It's been almost 2 months now. Yikes!
Anyway. I hope all is well there in Viking Nord land sir 🤣 and please take care! Tell the kids in your class an American said hello and to study hard! ♥️🤟
