As long as it is not on the car, you can absolutely clean it on the workbench. You can gently open the throttle plate and clean the bore and edges. Keep the electrical side at the top to keep the cleaner from getting in the drive portion. Just be gentle with the movement, it will be fine.

I moved mine quite a bit everything still works perfectly fine.. so may not be an issue for some vehicles

Well, you can move the plate to clean it and you will not damage the gears. The TBC is powered by the step motor, which generates electricity when moved manually. What you should not do is to open/close the plate rapidly, which may generate electric impulse above rated voltage of the control board and damage its components.

Toyota's you can manually move it open, just do it slowly, no need to remove it.
No brake cleaner, it leaves a residue. Use a product specifically for the Throttle Body.

Hes right, but at the same time. Turning your car on without all that stuff connected will send sensors gone crazy. I did my Toyota rap 4 20 19. And I used to stick to open The Thing. Cause mind understanding some of these can close on you and possibly hurt you. And I used a plastic cup to hold the cleaner and found out that it disintegrates the plastic cup along with the toothbrush I was trying to use. But I gotta clean though. I forgot to plug some stuff in and all the sensors were going crazy. When I started it up but went away after about a couple hours of the car being on.

I just take the floor jack handle and use half of it to wedge between the gas pedal to my driver seat and put it in the on position. I have the 99 acura tl but it uses a cable so no big deal there

I somewhat disagree with being advised to not manually move the throttle body i mean all vehicles are different but the service manual for my 2018 Toyota Tacoma says to move the flap by hand. i do agree however to move it slowly but if you not being a reckless it should be fine. however im sure there are some car manufactures who have cheap internals in there electronic throttle body's which can shear. i guess what im trying to say is when in doubt refer to the service manual of your specific vehicle.
but anyhow great video

What could be the reason when, after cleaning the throttle body on a Camry 2005 (cleaning on a car with the pedal pressed), rpm jump up to 2200 after starting up, go down to 1500 in 3 seconds and then drop to normal idle (650-700) with warming up? Before that, the rpm jump was up to a maximum of 1500-1600.

if u open that cover up will see how robust built those gear are.no chance to damage them as long is not powered on.

Yikes! What if I had already open the throttle butterfly by hand to clean it? How will I know for sure that I didn't just screw up my 2018 chevrolet traverse throttle body butterfly?

I've done it. How else do you expect to clean it, I do it with the car off, and I gently open it and gently close it, that shouldn't ruin anything. If you are experienced with working on servos, then you know what you're doing

This is not true on all the vehicles. On my Ford F150 I cleaned it and move the flapper and no issues issues.
