I love Venti, but I could never shake the feeling he's hiding something. He's definitely lying or stretching the truth a bit in certain situations.
He's met the traveler before without their recollection, he can talk to animals, he can hear so many things (Messages traveling in the wind), he knows the past and future, and it's very confusing how he states he's the weakest of the seven, when compared to someone like Nahida whom was trapped away from her nation with them barely giving her a thought half the time

Venti DECLARED HIMSELF to be weak. Remember that Zhongli is only slightly older than Venti, and that all nations use wind gliders which is a prayer to Venti.

If you do the somewhat “hidden” world quest in mondstadt, the one involving the broken clocks about the god of time, you’ll see a dialogue that says that perhaps the god of time had something to do with the god of anemo. Idk I remember the way that it was phrased made it sound like god of anemo is the god of time. Also in the very beginning of the game, when Jean explains who the fatui are, she says they’re followers of the cryo archon. She then goes onto to say “the cryo archon has always coveted (meaning envied/desired) the anemo archons.” yeah… venti is prolly a time bomb lol

I mean, he sure says he's the "weakest" but we have to remember alongside Zhongli, they're the only two original archons. Until now all the archons have had a connection being present in Khaenri'ah's fall. A weakling wouldn't have survived. Also, he sure has a lots of devotees. Venti using ANEMO to slice a mountain is definitely more impressive than Zhongli using GEO to split a mountain. You would need over a thousand PSI (in anemo power) to slice a mountain. 100 PSI is said to be enough to break human skin, and this assumption is purely based on the fact that the mountain is pure stone. If it consisted of minerals and ores, it could be harder to cut.

I like to think he wants peopl to believe he's the weakest, so he tells people that their powers come from control. But knowing Nahida is the Archon of Wisdom, she likely told us the truth about their power coming from their faith.
It's likely Venti used to be weak in the past, when the Laurence Clan had control. So he may think he's still at that power level, but he is likely stronger

I like to think he's one of the strongest, and slowly growing, due to his city loving and adoring him. Zhongli is likely going to get weaker due to his people thinking he's dead. And Nahisa is most definitely the weakest amoung them, but she may slowly get stronger, now that nobody but us/Traveler can compare her to Lord Rukkhadevata

Theory time: Venti was not lying about the control over the nation, nor was Nahida lying about power coming from belief/faith. Faith/belief can be considered a form of control, after all. Obviously there’s some contradiction here. The people of Mondstadt are devout followers of Venti which would make Venti pretty powerful, but Venti relinquished power over Mondstadt, making him extremely weak. So somewhere something doesn’t add up… so here’s the kicker of my theory. Venti lied about how powerful he is. He technically still has power/control over Mondstadt, whether he wishes it or not. “For what is freedom when demanded of you by a god” By being an absentee god, he left Mondstadt free to do what it wishes, but since that’s his ideal, and what he wants of his people, it can be argued that he forces the people of Mondstadt to be free. He ensured the Church was made to commemorate him and as a bard, spreads tales of Barbatos, ensuring he is never forgotten and that people still believe in him.

I think venti is way more powerful than he lets on and is trying to deceive the entire world as to hide the fact that the god of time exists.
