Hamas and Fatah on Thursday used a joint news conference to announce that they were united in their opposition to Israel's plan to annex parts of the West Bank and declared that they would resist the move with "all kinds of struggle".

Speaking from the West Bank city of Ramallah, Jibril Rajoub, the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Fatah movement, said they would "decide the tactics on the ground, the tactics on the field according to the Israeli actions".

"All the options are open if we reach the situation that the Israelis start the annexation and slamming the door for the two-state solution", he added.

Addressing the news conference via video link from Lebanon, Saleh al-Arouri, the Deputy Head of the Political Bureau of the Hamas movement echoed Rajoub's words.

Fatah and Hamas remain bitter enemies, and repeated attempts to reconcile have failed.

The annexation plan, unveiled in January, envisions bringing some 30% of the territory under permanent Israeli control, while giving the Palestinians limited autonomy in carved-up pockets of the remaining land.

But the plan has come under stiff international criticism.

The United Nations, the European Union and key Arab countries have all said Israel's annexation would violate international law and undermine the already diminished prospects of establishing a viable independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Even close allies, like Britain, have opposed it.

Maybe this is an unspoken ultimate plan that Netanyahu had on his mind, to bring the rivals together and have peace in the region.
