I got a couple of requests to do a tutorial of this song. It's longer than I intended, but I hope it's helpful.

I do this tutorial without a capo, but I have the capo on the first fret in the cover version I posted. No real reason why...

Excellent translation from the song to you, then from you to me. I'm not part of the Jazz community. This was very helpful. I will join your fan club.

Mark thanks so much, this tutorial has now allowed me to play this ....one recommendation to make the opening chord sound like the one on Kenny's version. 0x2432. And then 2nd go around open high e string

Good work.
Suggestion:
Try using a triad for your E walk-up —it's great for country, jazz or whatever ails  you.-—e.g.Right after the line,  "Makes your famous daddy look so dumb..." use;

E chord;  A chord w/ F# in bass (use thumb); (single notes of triad are: F#, E, B) Do this with your -3d, finger @ 4th fret, 1st finger @ 2nd fret & 4th finger @ 4th fret.  —Now, your are at the Amaj7

At this point you might try a Maj/Min 6 (5th fret) on some of those 'A's.   In some passages, The A Maj 7 comps better at the 5th fret.  Plus, It goes into the maj/min 6 easier. Using the 'A' Maj/Min6  accents the voice well of you are playing solo comp.  —Not for all the measures, —you'll see. Also: you are right there for your G# flatted 13th to 7th.

Sorry -I don't have a camera. (old fart)

Great job, thanks for putting this together. It would be great if you could give us some direction on a picking pattern. I can't seem to get it right.

You have a really nice voice. Having watched Paul Simon play that song, I think the Am is in fact a D9 (bass A) and the chord that comes after is an E (basse G sharp).

Splendid lesson--a bit of instruction on picking pattern would be usefu. I like your chord shape choices. Thanks

Hi, I'm struggling with the picking pattern a bit, I wonder if you could explain it using string. Numbers please. Great version of this song by the by way. Thanks

Extra note: I had no idea so many home players wanted to play this stuff. If you want to understand what is HAPPENING, look for a TEACHER who has had STANDARD JAZZ CONSERVATORY TRAINING. E.g. Berkeley, Oberlin or perhaps an 'old fart' who caught on from earlier old farts. Today, there are few cats who play the correct voicings, understand theory and reading.

You see, lads, most people today play the guitar using the rock pattern model and tab. Um, this aint no good if you wanna progress. Don't just learn guitar, learn MUSIC.

Yeah. Sorry. You gotta learn theory and staff reading. Golly. Sorry.
