How to Play Sublime 'Santeria' - Intro & Rhythm Guitar Lesson

Hello friends,
and welcome to part two of my Sublime "Santeria" lessons series. In this session we'll be employing a simple reggae or ska style strumming pattern as I break down the rhythm guitar parts for the intro, verse and chorus sections. For those of you who have made progress playing barre chord shapes, this is an excellent tune to test your skills. Let's get started!

I know your busy, But could you are someone that knows please explain Why there is a major 3rd chord instead of a minor chord? In other words how and why is the G-sharp in this chord progression major when in the E major key it should be minor. I love theory so that's why I'm asking. PLEASE HELP

I'm finding it excessively difficult to start and muted upstroke on the 1 and the played chord on a downstroke on the &. Is it bad to reverse it? I learned ska guitar thinking it was upstrokes and I'm having trouble breaking the habit...
