I love being able to help others by updating the index when there is an error. I'm so glad you shared with others on how to help submitting updates for the index!

The examples for "Explain or source your update" were very useful to me. When I get to that question/section, I usually feel like I'm on a witness stand, with a bright light shining in my eyes, and a disbelieving inquisitor asking me to justify myself. You just entered a simple explanation. It is a nice take-away for me.

Great tips - thanks, Devon! I was fairly familiar but wanted to be sure I hadn't missed something and, predictably, did learn something new! As always, great video :)

Thank you! I have entered names where they were misspelled (with a family in my tree named Oels, there are lots of ways the census takers spelled it! Oles, Olds, etc.), but didn't know about the nickname option. I had a terrible time finding some records for my paternal grandmother Marie, and then found a record of her family where she was listed as Minnie (my mother confirmed that she had that nickname; interesting, because my mother's own mother was named Minnie). Knowing that, I was able to locate more records, but I think now I will go back and add her real first name so others don't have the same problem.

I have a great grandfather named "Harry Burgwin" when they transcribed the record for him, they transcribed him as "Hanny Bungavin", so I was then no longer descended from Burgwins but now Bungavins. lol I had a good chuckle for that one.

Very helpful, I had actually forgotten how I had corrected information in the past.

(1:20) While the corrected form 'Geissler' is of course correct, to me the handwritten entry looks more like 'Geiseler'. This hints that the enumerator must have had German roots himself, since both forms exist in German surnames and have the same origin.

Love your work! Quick question: I've traced our family ancestry back to my great great great grandfather born 1834 in Tennessee, but the trail ends there and I'm unable to confirm earlier relatives. Can genetic genealogy locate distant cousins 6-7 generations back in a family tree? Thanks for any assistance and resources you can share.

I have cognitive difficulties so THANK YOU VERY VERY much 😊👍 for your video walkthrough of on of the ancestry type platforms. It was very handy for what I think I will need to do given issues some of my family CLEARLY OVERLOOKED from 1940 census transcribe errors within our family.
I have a quick question though. I am currently not a member on any of those sites etc. My question is: in order to make/post/request a correction on Ancestry & find a grave sites,
Do we have to actually set up a profile first to submit? And if the answer is: Yes a profile is necessary"; would it be out of the norm to have a close family friend submit the correction on behalf of a family member who is unable to for safety reasons? 🤔😇. (I hope that my question was clear enough. Sorry I was a little vague about safety reason part. A friend wants to help fix several errors from that census within her family ESPECIALLY cause my friend was named after four of them & all four of their names were wrongly transcribed)
😂😅 LOL I just realized that I basically repeated myself so sorry about that thank you for being gracious about my post. - J
