In those days, many players made so little money that they had to work off-season jobs. Today, there's no incentive to risk injury on a meaningless game, regardless of the game check.

I am still amazed that the World Cup still has a "Bronze" match - to see who gets 3rd place. Who cares? And yet, that penultimate game in the tournament is always sold out, fans are screaming just as loud as if the game actually meant something. Meh.
