1950s Dating. We Went 'Steady'

This is a portion of a television program made in the 1950s and presented on what was called educational television. It was part of a series designed to look at 1950s teenagers and what their lives were like. They will largely study the new rising middle class teenagers who at the time, appeared to be living by all of the "rules" that existed in the 1950s for them and how they would become or should become successful adults.

I wonder what happened to all of these people as they lived through the 1960s and had children by the end of that decade. Everything seems to many viewers who have commented on it, how "clean and upright" these students were. Of course they were carefully selected (remember there were rebels at that time including boys who wore leather jackets and girls for tight fitting skirts etc.) to be examples, not only of what teenagers were like but examples of what they should be like.

It’s so funny that she’s a teenager who sounds to our ears like someone who’s 80 years old would speak today. The tone, the cadence, the vocabulary, the sentence structure, everything. It really goes to show how everything about language changes over time, and fairly quickly.

Pretty sure my generation replaced “why” with “like”.

My grandparents met in high-school around that time and were "going steady" they've been together for over 65 years now and my god, they still love each other like they first met.

They over used the word "why", back then, as people over use the word "like", today

She said "why" twice... and 1000x comments about it

It's so strange how voices have changed over time

So articulate at her age.

Shows how our education and culture has really been affected.

I was born in the 90s and "going steady" was maybe not super common but also not a weird way to say it. I've used the phrase in recent years and people laugh at me and don't know what I mean. I think it still is a good way to put it.
EDIT: Since this is still getting attention, I'll just come back to add that I just heard "they're going steady" on the Amazon show "The Boys", so I guess it's still in use.

"Or so they think" that about sums it up.

Every time I see one of these, I understand my Mom better, and I’m so grateful to have come of age in the 90s/2000s

It’s crazy she’s either deceased or 95 years old by now

I love the way she sounds exactly like my grandma. It’s the same voice and the same words. It makes me cry. Miss her so much!

I remember you would sometimes be offered a St Christopher medal on a chain as a token to go steady.

My mom told us that our dad asked her to go steady (1974ish) and she said she didnt do that kind of thing because there wasn't a clear end in site. He said, "ok...do you do engagement then?!" She said yes....this was their first official date!! 😆💞
They were married over 40 years with a full life of 9 kids and over 30 grandkids...sadly my dad hasn't met his last few grandkids as he passed a few years ago.
