Okay, for the record? Banging on the jar lid? Works every time.

The secret is that you tap on it all around, evenly, and then turn the jar upside-down and then spank it a few times.

It should slip from your sweaty hand and you drop the jar on your foot, before it goes smashing on the floor.

Salvage what you can from the floor, and try not to get glass in it.

It's messy, but it gets the sauce out.

I like to embarrass people by using a bottle opener to break the seal then showing how easy it is to open then. Pounding with a knife or putting under water is so unnecessary and unproductive.
