Biggest mistake I've made is doing business with friends or family. Specifically friends. Worst clients. They are treating you like they did you a favor.

If someone is wanting you to negotiate to a lower price for your service what they are really saying is they don't value you or what you're doing for them. And they want you to devalue yourself and your work

I had a power wash done to my home. They promised to get my house clean minus the oxidation of aluminum siding. Long story short, dirt I could wipe of my house was the result. And they loaded their tanks up with my homes water and left. I asked for the balance to be negotiated and the owners have ignored me. I’m paying the balance left of the total 400.00 original bill, filing a complaint with BBB and attorney general, and advertising a sign on my front lawn in a high traffic area to SAY NO TO PRISTINE POWERWASH.

I've found my "best" homeowners are those who truly appreciate the accounting of all the collateral damage, not just the roof, and were happy you got them money for these other things so they can get those fixed. I got 1 guy probably 4k in collateral and he repaid it by getting me 6 referrals and kept in touch throughout the next few months to see how those builds went.
My "worst" was a guy who went to the local menards, who was our provider, and because he talked to some random workers and they didn't know us (even though company been local and in business for 20 years) he wouldn't trust us, even though we had a long track record of working with menards (and if he actually talked to management they'd know us) because he talked to some random person he just threw the month of work i'd done for him out the window. We were literally just waiting on insurance check to arrive, after i got him approved, and were set to build and he went with a competitor who didn't even have him built for another month

This is very true. My cheapest customers always complained and were never satisfied no matter how good of a deal you gave them or how great of a job I did.

Very enlightening, thanks for the knowledge.

Thank you Dmitry, I so agree with you about everything you say. I spent so much time trying to please those types of people, it never pays back does not matter how hard you try. But the good part is that there are many people who appreciate the work, and that should be the only focus

also, one of the worst parts is, that if you do a good job for a customer and they are satisfied, they hardly ever take the time to give your company a good review! its always the selfish ones, or tightasses as i like to call them, that want the discounts, all the extra work, etc, etc, and then they are still not satisfied like you said, but they are more than happy to leave you a bad online review. and you could always tell them that if the know so much about roofing, just get up there and do the job yourself if its all that

💯 Dimitry! Just sent this video to a buddy of mine. We’re both in our 2nd year of business.

Last night we were just talking about some jobs we had recently. Some people just want a discount no matter how fair your price is just to see if they can get you to lower your fee.

If I ever discount my fee, I will only do it for a reason. Not because they asked. Such as, “since you’re a new customer, and you were referred I’m happy to offer a 10% discount for your first service.”

Basically letting them know that it’s for a good reason and just this once.

Thanks for putting this out there man. The more we keep our prices where they need to be, the happier all of us will be in the end.

Another pet peave of mine is the use of certain words ;

I “just” need this done.
I need you to “just” do this …

As if to minimize the effort of doing what ever it is they are describing.

If it were “just” that easy why haven’t they done “just” that little ad on themselves ?

My worst customers have been liberals. Now if I see they are liberals, I tell them I'm too busy or charge them 3X my regular price.

How true.
Bedwetters are miserable to deal with.

Unhappy people will just never be happy. Interesting thought for sure.

I have also found that if they feel the need to inform you, unsolicited by you, that they are Policemen, Lawyers, or Surgeon's (not doctors but Surgeon's specifically) that they are going to be argumentative complainers.

Also on the upside if they are MBA types they are dreams to work for because they understand hiccups in a project and contingency's.

Can’t agree more . I have learned
This recently and turn down jobs at the first red flag I see . Don’t have time
To deal with these types of people . I already have enough problems don’t
Need theirs . I’ll let another roofer deal with them happily

those are the same people that ask for discounts when they go to their friends restaurants, give your friends business and exposure their business doesn't owe u shit.

Great video! Identify your ideal client and target them vigorously

It also depends on what demographic the client is

People from India and Asians barter and want the best deal

It’s basically a culture thing

White people who are well off tend to be cheap too
