It took off because of an effect called ground effect which creates a higher pressure zone underneath the wings which means there is more lift to push the aircraft off the water at a lower speed than normal planes.

i’m so lucky i’m only an hour away from the evergreen aviation museum, i went there last week and it was INSANE to see the spruce goose in person. i even got to go up to the flight deck and sit where howard hughes sat on that 30-second flight!

Keep in mind that shouldn’t be too surprising, the H-4 was mostly wood and has a huge wingspan with a lot of power behind it. Although it’s big it makes sense that it took off that quick.

The H4 was actually pretty light for it’s size, and the wings produced a LOT of lift. That’s why it can take off so slowly.
