There is a scientific case of a 28-year old man who suffered from a severely hollowed sternum and had two heart attacks in eight months. Doctors concluded that, a severe pectus excavatum deformity could cause cardiac arrest, and even death.

I have this(pectus excavatum) on the right side of my chest and I have the exact opposite(pectus carinatum) on the left side of my chest. Its not comfortable to lay in any position, especially my sides. I have a hard time breathing and It does cause alot of generalized pain in my torso. Its not super common to have either one, but most doctors are genuinely surprised too see i have both. Thats whats i got my most recent medical marijuana card for. I remember being told the surgery would consist of cutting me open, breaking all my ribs apart and reconstructing my ribcage. Then they would put a bar across under my sternum and a bunch of bolts and screws. The specialist told me that when I was 8 years old and I remember my mom being mortified and immediately rejecting it. Nobody would ever get me a brace, so it got progressively worse to where I cant wear shirts that fit without being asked what im hiding under my shirt. Its not really all that bad considering what others live with, like clubbed feet, or missing limbs, so im pretty content living with this deformity.

I have a very mild pectus excavatum, I myself, nor my friends even know that I have this, but when I became a teen, (15) I started going to the gym and after I gained a lot of kgs (13kg first year) and adjusted my posture, my chest looked good, I mean if I went to the pool, nobody knew I was having a deformity on my chest, but myself, I would look in the mirror and because I was so obsessed by the gym and my body image, I was seeing a problem with that little deformity, 6/7 months later, after the cut, I looked so good, Because I bulked for 1 year straight (and because I was a beginner I eated a like shit, too much probably) I gained a lot of fat too, but after the cut, I lost 8ish kgs of fat, But consistently gained muscle, I was looking very good.
Now I'm 16, and after becoming passionate about the gym, I actually like my pectus, because it is so mild, it makes my chest look bigger.

So to all people with mild pectus, dont do surgery as your first option, try the gym, gain muscle, bulk, cut and see yourself and then decide what to do.

I'm 14 and my chest goes outwards. I have an appointment on January 16. And I'm so excited. I have dealt with this chest problem for over 4 years and I'm so excited to get it fixed. Please send prayers might have to get surgery

I had pectus excavatum since I was born. First surgery went unsuccessful. Surgeon just flipped the bone upside down, and eventually, hole in the chest started to form again.
Second surgery was good; now I have a steel inside my chest to prevent bones from growing down again. Doctors said to practice swimming for about a year and add gym to it. Basically, surgery is only a half way of getting rid of hole in the chest. But, it’s necessary

I have had Pectus Excavatum my entire life. I got the surgery about a year ago. Easily the most painful experience I’ve ever gone through, but so worth it.

It sucks having this. It’s makes me so insecure. I love swimming but I can never go to swim pools because of it.

I had severe pectus growing up. My parents didn't really take it seriously until I started passing out in the mornings and during exercise. We scheduled a visit to Dr. Jaroszewski's clinic in Arizona and it turns out my heart was displaced so far to the left that it was completely under my left lung and touching the left wall of my chest cavity.

Got the nuss procedure done and I'm very happy with the results. The pain in recovery is like nothing you've ever felt, but it was worth it.

You definitely want a good surgeon, as this is a major procedure that is done more safely in some places than others. The Mayo clinic attaches your sternum to a small crane to lift it before placing the bars to eliminate complications due to flipping bars. They also tie the bars down with wire instead of brackets and screws to eliminate screw complications and bracket discomfort.

at 15 i was really skinny and had pretty noticeable pectus excavatum. i started working out a bit and now at 17 i put on about 9kg of pretty much only muscle mass (im shredded because i don’t eat enough) and now my pectus excavatum is not noticeable at all unless i take a really deep breath. you can definitely work through these things. it does get better.

to the people who feel insecure because they have this, my boyfriend has it too and used to be really insecure of it but honestly i think it’s cute. his isn’t super defined but when we cuddle and i put my face on his chest i can fit my nose and we laugh about it and joke that we’re a perfect fit edit: we broke up but my point still stands that this feature is adorable

I train jiu jitsu. One of my teammates has this. He has a special move that no one else can do that he calls the chestatine which is where he does a guillotine, but he grabs onto his rib cage like a handle to make it super tight.

I was diagnosed with this and yes it definitely impacts your breathing. Obviously it can lead to having a deformed chest (will impact you for the rest of your life)but I highly recommend seeing someone that specializes in this procedure. The procedure involves cutting open 2 sides of the chest and attaching brackets to the inside of the chest. They then put in a flat, bent bar and connect to the brackets, pushing the chest outward. Obviously this is a relatively big surgery but I highly recommend as it is a very successful procedure and when hitting puberty your chest kind of grows normally. The recovery for about a week or two is pretty painful but I’d do it again. It takes some getting used to having a bar in your chest but you only have it in for about 2 years and the results are pretty good. The surgery for getting it out is a lot easier then getting it out in.
