Shelby guides us through the history of the Fender Jazzmaster. Four distinct revisions come into play throughout this popular guitar's history: in 1959, 1960, 1964 , and 1974; and we were lucky enough to have tremendous examples of each under one roof.

1959 Fender Jazzmaster:
The Jazzmaster's first full year of production features a distinct gold anodized pickguard.

1960 Fender Jazzmaster:
The gold pickguard is replaced with a tortoise shell, although it retains a slab rosewood fingerboard and clay dot fret markers.

1964 Fender Jazzmaster:
The jazzmaster makes the switch to a veneer rosewood fingerboard in place of the slab board (based on lack of materials).

1974 Fender Jazzmaster:
Features a bound fingerboard and mother of pearl block fingerboard inlays.

Do you own one of these? Want to sell or trade it for something new? We buy and trade!

Gear Used:
Fender Jazzmaster Sunburst 1959 (s918)
Fender Jazzmaster Sunburst 1960 (s812)
Fender Jazzmaster Sunburst 1964 (s220)
Fender Jazzmaster Sunburst 1974 (s458)

So nice. All Blues from Kind of Blue Miles Davis 1959 album played in a 1959 Jazz Master.

I had a 58 in the early 60s. I traded it even for a 59 Stratocaster.

That's it, I'm getting a 59' + Beardwizard combo so I have someone to soak in reverb and play some Radiohead with. For real though, I'd like me some gold-anodized goodness. Good job on the demonstration Shelbs!

Very informative! I'd love to see more of these for other guitars. Good stuff, guys.

I love that aluminum pickguard way too much.

I'm the owner of a 1974 JM
Don't be fooled that JM is only a one trick pony. Not only is the JM played with surf or or Reverb vibrato. It rock's out balls to the wall's.
Rock & Roll. R&B, jazz, I can speak to any other incarnates of the Jazzmaster. But the American built 1974 is my cup of Tea.

All Blues and If I Fell, on Jazzmasters and in the same video. You, my friend, are killing it. Great demo!

I have one made in 1958 and I’m the original owner.

What he didn't mention is Fender changed the vibrato spring length/action in 61-62 to match that of the newly released Jaguar. The original spring tension up to that point suits the Jazzmaster better and is very smooth.

I have a 1958 (I believe they were made in mid-year before full production in 1959). If I were closer, I’d be happy to lend you mine. Good vid, all the best!

Great video! I never noticed in recordings how much sound came from the strings behind the nut, and between the tail piece and the bridge until I got my first Jazzmaster, a custom 1957 model. I can really hear those strings chiming in your video. Thanks for posting!

I've got a Feb '66 with the dot neck and binding. All original except Schallers and a Mastery bridge. It's an amazing guitar, the Mastery took it to a level I didn't know existed. I'm glad people are finally starting to wise up to these epic sleepers!
