I dont think that the right way of comparing 2 cameras. I own both of them and to my eye there's a huge difference and the RED DRAGON is a clear winner. You didn't used both cameras on a sort of rig and record at the exact same time, if you had had to change camera and lens and do the test again then the lighting might have changed by that time. I guess you've used the A7S on the full frame mode which isn't the same for the Dragon. You've used the Slog on the A7S but on the dragon seems to be slightly saturated at some point, was it graded? or maybe the standard rec709 was applied but definitely not the flat raw version. So according to me this comparison is irrelevant. Ohhh and it appears to be shot at different times of the day! Shadows dont lie :) but A7S is a good camera for the bucks but definitely dont stands against the mighty Dragon !

these are both great cameras, both of them win but the red epic is better in color as it seems it lets in more saturation. the A7s is extremely epic with the high ISO in being in low light. it would be a pain for me to say which one is better

with a different lense and some color grading you can easily make it look similar to the Red Epic Dragon, minus the huge quality difference which is obvious in the shot with the box

I dont know... the full power of the Sony wasn't even exploited. It looks more like just a bare bones comparison, which is understandable. But the winning attributes of the a7s is how adaptable it can be once paired with a shogun, prime cine lenses, recording at pro-ress 4k. 50mbs seems too compressed to compare to the dragon. I'd like to see the same resolution be compared and using the same glass.

Awesome video man. I'm thinking of getting an a7s soon and wow it actually holds up "look" wise like someone said in the comments to an Epic Dragon. It seemed the videos for the Epic Dragon seemed a little warmer in color than the a7s ones. Is this a thing for all RED cameras? Also, do you think if you color correct some a7s footage to make it a little warmer that it would look like the Epic Dragon even more?

almost see no difference, except dynamic range. sony a7s is quite a worthy opponent. an ordinary person won't see a difference. me personally expected more from red epic.

Would you side by side the Nikon D810 and Sony A7S please?

Hand held red epics are getting closer everyday, in a year or 2 Sony will have 6k mirrorless with unbelievable HDR and Iso, in fact. I would not be surprised if they made a mere this medium format camera next year

Guys, watch it in fullscreen on HDTV, there is a lot detail in Red camera compared to a7

Very different WB on both cameras. Makes the whole comparison useless.

it looks like White Balance is little off in some of the shots with the Red Epic Dragon. Why is that? Dynamic Range in the A7s with S log2 pp is really high

We cant compare RAW to XCVS ..

WB is the same? S-log 2 has a lot of noise because of the ISO.

where is the love yo.? u didn't do the framing right for the a7s. there was a other focus point set on both cameras.. noo Buenos.

AMAZING how well the Sony A7S holds up to the Epic Dragon in just the overall "look" of the image; in regards to highlight roll-off and motion and how they affect the end "look" of an image. The sony A7S (especially paired with a Shogun, O7Q or Pix-E5 shooting 4K Prores 422) is truly a mini FS7/ Mini CineAlta camera. Truly amazing and will go down in history as a classic, fantastic, mini-cinema camera.

Uh-oh looks like the more expensive one is less post-production friendly.

Regardless, Red is ALWAYS going to be better than ANY dslr in terms of dynamic range. Image quality-wise theres hardly a difference, but the Red never seems to fail to blow me away! l mean this is incredible! The dynamic range of that thing makes it 100% more cinematic than any dslr. It’s is like night and day.

Not sure what was going on there with the white-balance on the red (which is raw so who cares really) but it is significantly warmer than the a7s, even in slog there would be some tint. Hard to compare colours :/ Thank you for making this video though, its good to get as much info as I can :-)

Comparing an 8bit 4:2:2 A7s to a 12bit 4:4:4 Red, hmm...

When you compare cameras like this you might as well compare a 4x4 to a road car.

Yeah they're both cars and the both go from A-B but you can't do nearly as much with the road car.

You can't face really challenging situations and over come them, it's not as well equipped, can't take all the necessary extras one needs and is no where near as tough.

If you literally just want to get from A-B sure get a A7s. But if you need to do very heavy grading, save a shot, do SFX work, have a tonne of industry standard accessories you need to plug in, take a pounding and keep going then you need the Red. That's not to mention how much better the Red looks in that hands of a skilled colourist. Night and day man.

Putting these side by side on youtube is like driving the road car and the 4x4 over a gravel lane and then debating their merits.

I think that it's a win win but if I wanted an upgrade I'd chose a7s because both of them are ungraded, those cameras are built for grading and working with colors and videos, not just simply record and upload. And of course redEpic is better. But a7s 2500$ redEpic dragon 50 000 $ so I'm sure if you don't have a basic set for video, a7s is a better choice and than to buy redEpic cameras. And I just want to remind that you can adjust colors on a7s as far as you like.
