was the red on the right and the sony on left?

Red doesn't have in camera sharpening or noise reduction like most other cameras. it's designed to be done in post later. If you look at the DXO tests the Red Helium sensor is actually the sharpest.Trying shoot these two cameras in the same fashion doesn't hold water unless you address the intricacies of each. Nice effort.

Cool test, although despite technical perfection of sony, red's image is more pleasant to the eye.

BTW. @8:26 what's about this white rectangle on model's shirt?

Regarding sharpness and noise comparisons - bear in mind that the Red applies absolutely zero in camera sharpening or noise reduction and it must be manually applied in post, as opposed to programs like Lightroom/ACR which apply default sharpening/NR values upon import of photography stills.

Forget the comparison which camera/settings did you guys use for shooting this episode?
Seriously you look perfect!

i don't undeestand why you should make a comparison between professional camcorder vs professional dslr.
they won't 'flop' in the hand of pro.

were you using f-stops to compare? Or t-Stops?

I think Annie Liebovitz did a Vogue cover using an Epic at some stage?

I know guys have been using Red for fashion stills, but with fast shutter speeds so they're not shooting to render the video, just to pull the stills. Which brings it's own problems - how does a model know when you're taking a shot, and the 'tempo' of the shoot when she/he can't hear a shutter?

My solution would be one of those handheld clickers, which would not only let the model know, but also give a spike in the audio as an indication of when you thought the best shot was. Now, if only I had a Red...

Interesting, does this mean the Helium is really a native Iso 400 sensor? Was this the same on the Dragon? I've heard the Dragon recovers shadows better than highlights but this test of the Helium shows the opposite.

Thanks for this test btw, DXO has rated these as two of the top sensors. I'd be interested in seeing these compared with the X-T2 as that seems to be the sharpest sensor I've ever seen.

ISO comparison is invalid unless you boost the RED up to the same exposure. Camera manufacturers have been doing this for years, they lie about what ISO you're shooting at so in direct comparisons they look cleaner.

I don't know much about RED cameras, but I assume they use ASA ratings instead of true ISO ratings which I imagine would be a bit different in the same way f stops and t stops are different...

So for the RED, which color space did you use? Was it with the new pipeline: IPP2 which also will bump up the quality a bit? And which compression was used???

huge dynamic range difference in your video you just chose to gloss over

The Red Camera seems to be exposing at least -1.5EV (one and half) stops
so when you bump the latitude to +4EV its more like +3EV....
its a Cinema Camera and you are supposed to Light up your Subject, so its like Nikon D810 when you set it to ISO 100, its really ISO60 in real measured test as tested by

you missed the focal plane of the image @ 7:14 when testing the Sony A7rII, the text on the color checker is on focus and the text on the board she is holding is or am i just going

Olympus OM-D EM-1 mk2 has "pre-record." Olympus calls it pro capture. Records continuously with half shutter and saves off 14 frames before the full press at up to 60fps.

I actually prefer the Sony output. Man this company rocks! :)

It's not that ISO is missed calculated, it's simply that the sensor is smaller than the A7RII, so it get around 30% less light.
So for the same aperture, same ISO, same Shutter speed, you'll get ((1/crop factor)*100)% less light.

Interesting test, thanks for sharing this!

OMG PLEASE list what images are from what cameras when displaying two images side by side or shown one after the other. I literally had to keep going back and fourth trying to figure out what came from what. And even then, I'm pretty sure I got a couple wrong. We shouldn't have to guess. Sorry, love the show. Just couldn't hang with this one. Sucks because I really was interested in the subject.
