Juniper berries are covered in wild yeast, which you can use to make a sourdough starter and/or a wild yeast starter! It's super simple AND it's fun (who doesn't love wandering into the desert to snag wild yeast?)

I knew that juniper berries were wild yeast but didn't know it was the white dust. Thanks for the information.

I picked some desert juniper berries about two weeks ago and used them to start my own sour dough starter going to make my first loaf of bread tomorrow with it and some rolls for thanksgiving

Hey wait a minute, my partner sent me this from tiktok the other day! Very fascinated what sort of character the juniper yeast has leant to the starter, and also quite tempted to try that home-soda starter too, since I love my sourdough starter already!

You also use Juniper Berries in their dried purple form to make Root Beer.

pretty sure the white stuff is actually epicuticular wax, but there is also yeast on there, like on other fruit

You can also use honey to do the same thing! I'm making my own starter with honey. Have you ever made a SCOBY or tried Kombucha?

You can cover with 100 or 0 proof alcohol and let sit and it makes gin.

You're a wealth of information. Often, I think it'd be cool to be your neighbor.🤭

What do you do with the berries once you go to make bread ? Do you just pick them out ? Or do you leave them in the dough?
