This is the first time I've ever been up this close to one that was not just a shell. So I had to snap some photos and video of it making it's sound.

For those of you who don't know: This cicada is the Superb Dog-Day Cicada, Neotibicen superbus. It is mainly found in Texas and Oklahoma, with sparse populations in Mexico. Though this cicada is primarily found in Texas and Oklahoma, its range has gradually spread and it can now also be found in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, and Missouri. This cicada cannot be found east of the Mississippi River.

Imagine hearing this sound 24/7/365 constantly ALL the time, since 1984.
Welcome to my world with tinnitus.

That fxcking sound. First time I saw one as a kid…of course I tried to poke it with a stick as humans do, and that noise made me think twice. I came home telling my dad I saw an alien species and described it. He laughed and told me what it was

We used to catch the emerging nymphs in the evening as they were emerging to break out into adulthood and put them on the curtains of our bedroom. We’d have adult cicadas buzzing around our room in the morning.

If you focus and watch this while squinting your eyes you can see a wicked design on the back of this cicada!
