I, like many other Americans, took up arms after 911. It didn’t take but maybe a week or two into my first tour to realize what was happening. I’ll never forget the words of the man who made me feel like the bad guy.

On the banks of the Euphrates River, we stopped and spoke to a man. We asked him, “how do you feel about Americans?” His response floored me. “Before the war, I was a lawyer in Baghdad. I had three houses and a beautiful family. Now I live in a tent on the side of the river and have nothing. How do you think I feel about Americans?” 😞
