How long do doctors work?

Imagine being in life-or-death situations for 36 hours straight, no breaks. This is the harrowing reality for many doctors in India. Exhausted, overworked, yet they continue, because lives depend on them. But at what cost? This extreme fatigue isn’t just dangerous for them; it’s a ticking time bomb for patient safety.

The fix isn’t just a band-aid solution. We need a systemic overhaul. More doctors to distribute this Herculean task. Strong security measures to protect these healthcare warriors. Comprehensive insurance is a safety net for them and their families.

This is about more than healthcare. It’s about humanity. It’s about protecting those who sacrifice everything to save lives. We owe them this much. It’s high time we recognize and address this silent crisis.

This is no joke my father is a doctor he is 46 years old and still work night shifts and attend conferences, different camps to the point that as his family we cry for attention. Like if you visit any household where the bread winner is doctor you would notice that most of the children are starved of family time. I miss my father so much because the only time I see him for a long time is on sunday from 4 pm to the 8 am monday. Usme bhi he prioritise sleep and we let him because he is very tired.

It's ridiculous that lakhs of students are fighting to get into MBBS and they've got this limited seats!
Again a lot of students having potential loose the seats due to reservation.
Now those 1% that come to MBBS have to work this relentlessly because they are less doctors!
Gosh they need to fix this as soon as possible!

As someone who has worked for 56hours straight in internship, 36 hours seems like a dream😍.

I have seen general hospital on duty doctors working for more than 2-3 days in emergency department 😮 I was surprised to see it in government hospital. We need more doctors.

To all people vouching for more colleges- i am a student at a top medical College in delhi and have friends all over india. Pls understand that more seats does not solve the problem. The govt builds the colleges, but does not provide funds to run them. There is serious lack of equipments, professor posts are empty, they are not getting paid. Students are passed without proper training.

I totally agree with this pg's are the ones who work like a machine.
Yesterday itself i asked my sir why he is so disinterested in the class then he said he had not slept for 4 continuous days working in casualty, icu, opd and even in wards😢😢 and the worst part is he had to take class for us - ug students after all this work.
It is really hectic and horrible 😔😔

We are really taking our medical system for granted.

I've seen resident doctors come in super passionate, but then they work for a week straight without any breaks, no time to shower, use the bathroom, or eat. After a while, their passion fades, their empathy vanishes, and they only focus on getting the work done. What do we expect?

The remedy is obvious. What is amazing is how our society couldn't care less.

It's not we need more doctors, it's senior doctors who are not working properly....

Completely agree. I’ve multiple family members in that field. Even the families suffer due to overworked doctors. There’s no life for them when they work this much.
