Why I bought the Pitts and Spitts 1250 over the Yoder YS 640

I received some questions about why I chose the Pitts and Spitts New Pellet Grill vs the Yoder YS 640. If asked before Pitts and Spitts came out with their new Maverick line of pellet grills I would have went a different direction. But their new line is just that good.

Thanks for the review. I'm also considering the same vendors you mentioned. I really am torn between the Yoder and the Pitts and Spitts and was leaning toward Yoder but the hopper capacity, the roll top lid, stainless and overall build quality of the P&S is probably changing my mind. Thanks again.

I'm so glad I ran across your video. I've been looking at a yoder, but this thing looks great! American made and Texas baby! Doesn't get better then that, buying one next month.

I had it narrowed down to Yoder 640 w/comp cart, P&S 1250 and the LSG pellet grills. I went with the Yoder for a number of reasons. LSG's timeline was 20+ weeks, I love them but that just doesn't work for me. The P&S hopper is a bit older technology when it comes to the igniter and controller while having a ton of space and I am sure it does great. The 35lb hopper was appealing at first but I have owned a Louisiana Grill LG1100 for 10 years and the 20lb hopper has NEVER been an issue. All well constructed and great units so you really cannot go wrong either way.

It's great to be able to buy a good product manufactured locally. That's why I bought an Outlaw wood pellet smoker; I live 20 minutes from where they are made here in Idaho. Pitts and Spitts was my second choice, but I went with Outlaw because I could shake hands with the man who made my cooker, and go see him again with any needs that might come up later.

The video that influenced my decision a year ago. No regrets. 👍

I did purchase the Pitts and Spitts. Works great; cooked St Louis ribs on Monday that were awesome and will be doing a 6# ribeye roast with reverse sear on it today. I especially like the roll top lid and it's ease of opening and balance. No smoke leakage at all and the grill just looks great with the stainless and it's easy to keep clean. It's my first pellet smoker so I have no reference to others but I have no complaints.

Is that 304 stainless? Edit. Yes it is! From the website.
The carbon steel cooking chamber is made of 7 and 10 gauge carbon steel. This grill comes standard with our signature 304 stainless steel lid and work shelf.

I got the Yoder 640s, and sometimes I feel like I should have got the P&S. I like the simple look of it.

Thank YOU! Nice review! I appreciate what you had to say and your honesty. I'm at a crossroads among this Pitts & Spitts cooker, the YS640s, and the Lone Star Grillz 20" x 36" Pellet Smoker. I've heard lots about the Pitts & Spitts and YS640s on this thread. Has anyone had experience with the Lone Star Grillz 20" x 36" Pellet Smoker?

After 4 years, do you still love and recommend this grill?

Man these Yoder comments are horrible. Make sure y'all keep that thing in the garage so it won't rust on you. They just released a new an improved grill and didn't address the rust issues. Wow big mistake. I have owned all kinds of smokers. From GMG to RT to Ys to P&S They have goods and bads. The only bad I have had with the P&S is that price tag. As far as cooking on it it has preformed very well. Over and over and over. Thanks for the video Robert 👍

There both great grill I can’t speak for the Pitts but I have a Yoder in about one year I have rust all over and I take care of my grills all ways covered and cleaned regularly I have cheap stick burners that I’ve had for years that don’t have as much rust as my Yoder for that price you should get a better finish

Nice grill. For that kind of money I might go for Fast Eddy or other commercial unit. Had Yoder 640. Awful temp control. Have BlazN Gridiron for several yrs now. Been outstanding. It really doesn't make that much difference as to what you're cooking on as to who is doing the cooking. A good pitmaster will produce good results on damn near anything. Enjoy reviews.

Can you easily stand a beer can chicken in there without the top or roll door crushing the top of the chicken?

Well, from what I've seen yoder has the same thin blue smoke as this so idk if you can make an argument about that

Ironically I was going to completely write P & S off the list cause all the videos I’ve seen at low temps they had no smoke coming out the chimney or when they opened it up . Until I find more like this … I’d probably hit the Yoder before a P & S

is that a fireboard controller? How did you install it?

How often would you say it smokes like that? Like a few minutes on and then a few minutes off or does it smoke well pretty much throughout the entire cook? Also, what kind of smoke do you get at temps around 225-250? To be honest I was looking at the Yoder and the new timberline Traeger and never even thought of pitts and spittle but I’m so glad I came across this video! If it smokes like that regularly, that’s the smoker I’m buying.

Are you still happy with your Pitts and spits? I’m trying to decide on the Yoder 640 or this grill you have now.
