The topic of superbosses is so incredibly expansive and we thoroughly enjoyed diving into it with this latest Evolutions video! Big thanks to Chris for helping with the script and to all of you for your continued support and encouragement! (p.s. who's your favourite superboss?) ~Darryl/Lauren

FFX: hey, Yojimbo, see that guy over there? Here's some money; deal with him.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Warmech was actually Omega's first incarnation and Cid of the Lufaine was responsible for building both?

I always love how when you do a complete series lore or game play based video you always include the two mmos, XI and XIV most people tend to skip over those since because they’re mmos

“RPGs generally are not known for being soul crushingly difficult.”

*Laughs, the cries in SMT.*

Slight correction on Warmech, it's far from the only sci-fi element in the game - the dungeon it's found in, the Flying Fortress, was given a clear "space station" tileset in the original NES release, and both it and the preceding Mirage Tower dungeon are full of robot enemies.

When I played FFV on GBA, I grinded until every last job was maxed, and then fought Omega and Shinryu. Because of how strong I had gotten, they actually didn't seem that hard. Then I did the bonus dungeon and fought Omega MKII and Neo Shinryu, and proceeded to cry as I got my ass handed to me.

Regarding Ultima and Omega weapon in FF8, there **is** context to Ultima weapon. Researchers were researching the draw system as well as GFs, and were ultimately looking at creating a new system altogether. They were specifically using Guardian Forces in their research, which explains that Ultima Weapon was a monster created through experimenting with Guardian Forces, which is why you can draw Eden from it. This makes sense because one of my biggest questions first playing FF8 as a kid was why didn't people capture/detain monsters and forcefully draw from them, much like how we hold certain animals in captivity to make use of various attributes such as Horses for developing antivenin or horseshoe crabs to harvest their blood. This explains that there was in fact research being done on this matter, and through optimizing and looking for new technology they had to flee the island because they created a super powerful monster. Given the similarity between Ultima and Omega weapon, it can be assumed they're cut from the same cloth.

They also clearly reward you too. Omega's reward of a trophy is just bragging rights, but it's right at the end of the game anyway so a tangible reward isn't nearly as important as the player wouldn't have much of an opportunity to play around with it. Ultima's reward is more obvious though, you get the most powerful GF in the game and you can get 100 ultima stones from beating it which can be converted to 100 Ultima spells. Eden's biggest benefit is its long cast time, which means you can very easily max out the 255 limit on overpowering its attack, or even better you can use it in conjunction with Selphie's limitbreak to roll for "The End" skill, to instant kill any enemy in the game (or finish the current phase if it's a multi-phase boss). I used The End to finish off Ultimecia's penultimate and ultimate forms (I accidentally started rolling for it one turn early) and was able to roll it twice thanks to how much time is allotted thanks to Eden.

The real superboss is the friends we made along the wait... wait no. It's definitely Shinryu from FF5.

I'm not sure I would consider the savage raids in ffxiv as super bosses. Sure they're stronger than the story bosses but that's just because of the nature of the mmo. The only ones I would consider to be super bosses would be the ultimate raids (unbending coil of bahamut and weapons refrain), and savage second coil.

Grinding in ff8 makes everything a superboss

I remember playing the original FF on the Wii through the Virtual Console. I thought that Warmech was mandatory boss because I bumped into, and got defeated by him, twice in a row. I bumped into him again for a third time, and finally beat him. Imagine my shock when I found out he was only an ultra-random encounter.

The EXP was nice, though.

I love superbosses. I feel like they are an important staple in RPGs. What I like the most is having lots of bosses to challenge through hunts, colosseum fights, and post game EX dungeons. I really love Star Ocean and Tales Of games for including most of these features.
