Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I started painting acrylic landscapes and stills about a year ago, but about 3 weeks ago I tried to get into portraits. I searched on YouTube and found MANY creators who had techniques and styles of painting that fit them, but not me. They all kind of ignored the fact that the first time with portraits will not turn out the way you want it to. You, on the other hand I found about a week ago, and I have improved so much! I am using your techniques and style but I use acrylics since my studio is my room and there is not a very good ventilation and my parents always complain if there is a stench they don’t like. Thank you! One problem I am running into is how to do teeth and smiles. I can do lips closed, but not smiles, it just looks like a white blob in between the lips when I try. I am hoping I can get oil paints near the summer when I can paint outside, and follow your foundations to oil paints course! You are the only person who I can actually paint alongside and follow the videos and not get frustrated and confused. Thanks!

Honestly, I am a fellow artist and have started looking at other artists on you tube because I had the idea and people have suggested I take my passion public and to social media and to youtube. Given the pandemic nation, work is not easy to find so I have been looking for ways to make money from my art my talent something I am good at and enjoy. I have seen quite a few tutorials now from many youtubers and I have to say I am not an oil painter my mediums art watercolor and coloured pencil as well as grphite and charcoal. So the fact these videos are more informative all around. I am noticing much of what is talked about and done I can apply to my mediums! It also has given me the need and motivation to start oil painting as well cost is usually a factor when it comes to making my art and oils intimidated the bank. Watching these videos are quite inspiring and I enjoy the full content for learning its definitely a much more educational platform than many others. I would recommend these videos to anyone who wants to be more creative or is an artist looking to enhance their knowledge or tools or try another medium even! thank you for rich content and useful information!

Hi Chris, I'm really enjoying everything you put out on your channel. You have a great teaching style and take the mystique and snobbery out of learning to paint. Don't stop!

You're starting to blow up dude. I remember when you had less than a 1k subs. Congrats. And I'm super guilty of not using a lot of paint and working too slowly lol.

I really enjoyed this paint talk, I am slowly working my way through them all, now that I have found your brilliant channel. I did smile to myself when you were saying about not using synthetic brushes on thick paint as they just don't handle the weight. I always think that trying to use a synthetic brush with thick oil paint is a bit like trying to lay concrete with a feather, it just isn't going to happen. lol.

I had an instructor once who did a 30 day challenge. She did a painting every day . She was also a good marketer. She got the local paper to print each painting daily and to give her publicity. She chose local people. The mayor, a fireman, a policeman etc.
It forced her to be prepared and to paint quickly.

Thanks again for sharing your experience. I have a question about lighting. I paint in a apartment with good natural light in the daytime but I would have more time to paint if I could use the night . Can you share your thoughts on what makes good lighting for painting?

Awesome 😍thank u for sharing! My q:Do u think name brand art supplies really matters/can make a better artist? Just because art supplies _especially oilpainting_ can get really expensive. And I've been struggling lately in order to find proper supplies since I live in a developing country. Thank you!

Funny idea for your hat...what about if you paint a picture of yourself on that hat...and in that painting you're wearing that same hat, and that hat also has a picture of you. It's hats all the way down haha
