The one thing I feel is worse than Landlords are the letting agents who do bugger all.

I was lucky enough to be able to buy a house last year. The only reason why this was a possibility is that I work for a company that were acquired by a bigger business. The CEO had allocated us all shares years ago, and these now paid out when the company was acquired. I received pretty much enough for my house deposit and conveyance fees. Why am I saying this? Basically to illustrate that I am a property owner through PURE LUCK. 90% of people who I know who are property owners have a massive leg up, they have help from somewhere. I also live in Sheffield where the prices have been increasing ridiculously, largely due to buy to let landlords from the South East buying up local housing stock, but which are still far cheaper than Greater London and it's commuter belt. This is yet another illustration of how the UK is a failing society run in the interests of the few.

The "good tenant" line is trotted out constantly. They certainly mean, "someone who is happy to be treated as a serf". The amount of times that s 21 has been used to get rid of folks I've come across via my work with ACORN has been MASSIVE. Landlords are the worst people about I cannot believe they continue to exist in 2023.

In what world does this property owner have to cover a £850 deficit each month? Oh the one where he wants to pay off the house in 10 years so has a bigger monthly mortgage so he can go invest in another property to make you their slave

I remember in the 90's with people like Kirsty and Phil pushing the idea of the 'property port folio'... I remember so what happens if we all have more than one property? What happens to the next generation when they are looking for homes? Well here we are...
Greed! Thanks Kirsty... thanks Phil... You made greed acceptable 😭😭😭😭

Landlords want to treat a house like any other asset (eg. Right to sell immediately under s.21), but also unlike any other asset they refuse to accept any type of loss on monthly mortgage payments. Landlords pass all risk to tenants, and assume all the profit. It's also propagated by a government that deliberately keep these house prices inflated.

None of this is a surprise. It is true there are bad tenants, but to allow landlords to evict good tenants is unacceptable.

"Why do i have to spend $800/month on my own mortgage?! Thats unreasonable!" -landleech

Every debate I have ever had with the landlord goes basically like this:

Me: "Landlords do [bad things landlords do.]"

Landlord: "Indubitably. But I'm not like those other landlords, I'm a nice landlord!"

Landlords "Buy your own house"
Rich people "Just stop being poor."
Same thing, no?

To all landlords: If you can't afford to buy a house, don't. If you can't afford to pay for a mortgage if your tenant misses a payment, don't buy a house, you can't afford to buy a house.

The country needs a massive public housing programme with quality housing, not run down, old blocks of flats in bad areas which much council housing has become.

Easier said than done.
I am on the Autistic spectrum, I can function, off & on, but have never been affluent enough not to be stuck in the rental trap.
I have had a string of private landlords and without exception, to date, they have been slippery eels, so as a result, I have had to perform repair jobs internally and even have a door fitted.
I have also been lied to about necessary repairs to windows and roofing, promises made, then broken.
The feeling of being over a barrel never leaves me and I live in trepidation of eviction notices.
I consider myself a model tenant, but this seems to mean little within the system we are "forced" to function within.
I love the old Rising Damp show and like to caricature each landlord as Rigsby, but it's not so amusing when you take on the real life role of Alan or Phillip.

Excellent, and Aaron's acting at the end of the clip is brilliant.

As a landlord I am saddened to read some of the comments from tenants. I’ve always tried to be fair and honourable, when renting out I always ask the tenant to treat the property with respect and keep the gardens tidy and be respectful to other tenants. In 18 years I’ve only had to evict two tenants both due to non payment and violent behaviour to other tenants. I always have any repairs completed within 24 hrs .once the keys are handed over I never enter a property unless invited or to provide repairs. I respect my tenant’s privacy and yet this is seldom reciprocated. No tenants have ever paid my mortgage, I’m not a pay to let landlord, neither I’m I rich or own an expensive car.I am a social minded person and believe everyone has the right to have a decent home. I invested my pension in houses that were derelict buildings to provide homes in our area and yes I do earn an income from them, does that make me a bad landlord?

My rent is 62% of my income. There is no mortgage on the house and I can’t afford food for the whole month. Who is my landlord ? My mother. Can’t live anywhere else because it would be more expensive than what I’m paying now still. Screwed doesn’t even cut it

I am exactly that tenant that is currently being evicted after doing nothing wrong. i can't afford to live in london anymore and haven't found a job anywhere else although I am constantly applying. i relate to that woman's story. it feels like an endless search for a place to be safe and make a home. no one is talking about this except Michael. it feels like screaming into the void
