Its time we ran this country for its citizens, and not its corporations and landlords.

And there you have it - a former council property - the right-to-buy was another conservative party con

This is insane. Over £37, 000 a year to live in a 3 bed ex council flat?! Insanity.

Absolutely disgusting prices. My mortgage on a 2 bed bungalow is £465pm. We bought for £130k in 2018 and identical bungalows on our street (with less land) are now listed for £225-250k. House prices need to plummet and people should be banned from owning multiple properties until every person is housed.

Great point by Aaron. These hypocrites would never take a pay cut but tell everyone else to.

That is the so called capitalist system we reside in.If doctors or those who work on the railways ask for a wage increase some of the media accuse them of holding the country to ransom but a private landlord can ask for unaffordable increases in rent and this is regarded as within their contractual rights to do so however inflationary the effect. The rentier economy always favours those with assets over those who have only their labour to keep a roof over their heads.

Profiteering is driving inflation!!!
In addition we've had decades of relative wage stagnation.
We need to address both these issues.
Thank goodness for channels like Novara who are exposing the truth.
Keep up the amazing and abosoultely vital work you do.

I'm about to say something that sounds mad but it's something I truly believe. I'm glad that I have Cerebral Palsy because if I didn't, I'm not sure how me and my family would survive. My disability means we were top of the list to get a housing association house. We used to privately rent (in the 90s) and even then it would take almost everything to pay it every month. Having a disability has given my mum and I lifelong housing security but it shouldn't be this way....Everyone deserves housing security and we need to take a leaf out of the post-war Labour government's book and commit to it.

Just a reminder we used to have fair rent inspectors in the the U.K. landlords could only increase rent very small increments. Can we not enforce it again if enough people demand it.

My landlord imposed a 35% rent increase then because I suggested it was not welcome they issued a section 21 after 8 years of paying rent on the nose and being the perfect tennant, then sold me that if I didn't go when they asked they would issue a section 8 out of fresh air in order to let the property to a new tenant at the market rate, the family has owned the house since 1974 and been passed down to the adult offspring . The law and system in place is beyond broken it's no different to war on tenants

My mother bought her 3 bed council maisonette in 1995 for £37k. It's in Peckham, SE London.
She sold it 2 years later for £55k.
I've kept an eye on it over the years. It's been bought and sold several times since, with the last time being over £800k.
The rooms are not that big.
It's a terraced property with no allocated parking. I remember you could hear your neighbours either side of you, and above.
This is madness... I dread to think what the rent would be like...

Michael, this is just the tip of an iceberg. When you are a leaseholder with the mortgage, not only your interest rates are increasing but also your service charges. Sometimes, there is ground rent payable too, and that is either connected to RPI rate, or might even be doubling every 5, 10, 15 years. The ground rents monies go into the landlords, very often with trusts established on the Island of Guernsey, meaning that the taxes are being avoided and the monies don't return to Treasury. Renters and leaseholders are absolutely screwed in this country.

Don't know who these private sector workers are who are getting 7%.. campaign for the building of council homes. Not the scam of so called social housing but real council homes. Homes owned by the state. Homes that provided good secure environments for people to have families and feel connected to their communities. A housing system that regulated house price inflation. A system that provided homes for people in rural agriculture areas so they didn't have to move away to find work. A system that allowed the very fabric of society to evolve into a decent society. Campaign for council homes!!

I wish something could be done about this. These people are the true parasites of society.

I hate scumbag landlords. Thatcher really did turn the people over. I feel your pain. I just wish which ever government is in power, would get a grip of the landlord situation, and stop affordable housing being bought by these greedy People. And restrict them to one property to rent. Horse and bolted comes to mind. I HATE LANDLORDS😡

I blame homes under the hammer when it became ok to buy a house as an investment rather than a place to live in.

Yeah but at least food, gas, electricity, water prices etc aren't going up, oh wait. 🤔

There's also thousands of empty houses in the area I live. Second homes too. The whole making money out of property for owners is immoral. What a horrible wicked culture we attempt to live in. Hope you're ok Michael. ✊🏻

And in QT they spent ages talking about support given to mortgage payers but jack all about private renters. But next door to me (also in East London) the HMO of a 3 bed house (reconfigured as 5 bed) is charging 4 grand a month.

You're absolutely correct Michael.
