Done exactly that on my 220d deisel. Apparently this supposed to improve fuel economy, have you noticed that since your repair.? 
Also this procedure may clear the ubiquitous P0400 EGR code (unless you have electrical or connector issues with the EGR motor).
Just a small note also this EGR is electrical and not vacuum lines like oldie days.
