I’ve ran the smolov jr program 3x. Yes it was brutal but worth it. Strength increased and the size of my legs blew tf up. Would highly suggest it to experience lifters who enjoy strictly squatting.

Hey Matt, are you going to do a meet recap for nationals? Ending was a nailbitter. Would love to hear you talk about your process and mental state waiting to see that last deadlift from the sidelines. Thanks for the content and congrats

Smolov Jr felt wayyyy easier than what I was doing before it but it still peaked my strength and got me PRs. I've resigned to only use it as a peaking method once in a while just for that sweet 1RM feeling.

I think I agree with this to an extent. Smolov jr helped me get my bench up to 255 for 1, but then after a few weeks it dropped a bit. I still like it tho. I did not get past the first squat workout

And the actual 13 weeks Smolov? What about that. Way more effective IMO.

I ended up doing smolov split up, so instead of 4 times a week i split the program up in two weeks.
So 6x6, 7x5 week 1
8x4, 10x3 week 2
And then cycle it, so far my lifts haven’t plateaud and fatigue is kept manageable.
I think 4 times a week is overload

I came back to the gym after 10 years off a month and a half ago. I ran smolov Junior immediately and extended the length of the program one week while adding 15 lb per week. I brought my bench from 275 day one to 330 after My extended 4 week Smolov program without taking a deload week.

I restarted smolov 2 days after I maxed out and now I'm on week 2 of the second cycle and I'm still adding 15 lb per week.(I'm probably going to have to cut it to 10 next week) It's looking like I'm going to hit at least 360 in two weeks after a proper deload.

This program has brought me more strength faster than I could have ever imagined and I have literally zero joint pain. If you can handle the workload it's unrivaled. Putting nearly a hundred pounds on your bench naturally, even with noob gains in 2 months is unthinkable with any other program.

What do you think is the best powerlifting program for a beginner?

Could something like that or any other high volume program be run once and then do something else with medium to lower volume after that for a training block or two, and then go back to that higher volume training again after? With deloads in between. And just keep repeating something like that for a long period of time.

So according to this I accidentally did smolov jr In December and got my bench from 125lbs-185lbs

Matt, what about running a standard strength program leading into a meet but leaving 3 weeks for smolov jr to peak. Probably squat since it helps deadlift. I put 10kg to my dead without pulling at all during my Smolov Jr squat.

What Matt is saying here goes in direct opposition to how he actually trained when he was coming up, doing a ton of volume WILL make you progress like crazy.
If you select the weight properly, you can run the smolov base or smolov JR for a very long time, over and over.
I especially think for bench it’s helpful, just for the love of god don’t use the recommended weight increases.
Set it up so that it’s very sub-maximal in the beginning and just add weight per cycle, so by the time you have run it three or four times you will have eclipsed your old numbers, have massively increased work capacity and have amassed a ton of good reps at lighter sub max weight.
If you want to use it for squat just do it 3 days per week instead of 4.
Don’t jump into it without increasing your frequency first, add in a day per week until you can adapt, or literally start out using 80% as your max so your working sets are very manageable

So what if I ran Smolov 13 week which has a good amount of rest weeks and then never ran it again? Would I still keep my strength?

Do you have any tips to help lockout on deadlift?

What would you suggest someone do after they run Smolov? For more long term strength building?

I think the best way to use smolov is temporarily for sure

Thing is you only keep 80% of your max. Due to drop in intensity and frequency, you won’t sustain it. I’ve done smolov before and it was amazing but it’s more of shock program if anything
