STOP BUYING CHEAP POLYSTYRENE BODYBOARDS!!!

This video discusses the impact of cheap bodyboards on both the environment and the performance of the boards. Cheap bodyboards are made with low-quality materials such as polystyrene, which can harm the environment and marine life when not disposed of correctly. They are also more likely to break or malfunction and lack important design elements for optimal performance, making them difficult to control in the water.

Iain conducted a demonstration to show the difference between a cheap board and a higher-quality board and concludes that cheap boards are not recommended for the general public due to their lack of durability and safety features.

Buying cheap bodyboards isn’t great for the planet and they sure as hell aren’t great as bodyboards.

This video should be played at every coastal town in the summer months, epic job Iain!

On the 2nd week of my trip to Hawaii, I went into a surf shop and rented a quality bodyboard. No waste and the daily rate was far less than buying a cheap one

Hey I would like to say that everything that your teaching is 100% correct, and just really good at explain everything, not just for this video but also your duck diving video and any other videos that you post about teaching people how to bodyboard. I grew up in the era where you learned it on your own. I'm glad kids now days has some reference on how and what to do to get started.

Such a great video topic, thanks for making videos like this that are focused on the reality of bodyboarding 🤙

Excellent video! I've been aware of this for a while. We ended up getting one of those cheapies for free, as a tenant left one behind. I told my wife the board is rubbish and that we should be careful using it. Generally it's used in the swimming pool. I went out and bought my son a proper, well constructed board. No regrets. In fact it was his birthday gift last year, and today is actually his birthday again! Thanks for creating this.

Preach chief! Legend. Cheers from Bristol. Was so stoked to watch your video from The Wave as I went there for the first time in a wave pool 5 days before seeing your video 🤙

Great video Iain. I've been pushing the same message for years now. Unfortunately the holiday market brigade don't really understand the concept of paying a fair price for a decent quality board... this has always puzzled me because some of these same people don't mind spending hundreds on snowboards, golf clubs etc. It's not a difficult concept you get what you pay for. I would suggest a family share a decent durable PE board for around the £100 mark they hold a decent resale value of at least half the original cost....so use it 5 times and it's basically paid for itself.

I’ve recently gotten into body boarding and I love watching your videos they definitely help me because I don’t know how to swim due to my phobia and watching your videos helps me get rid of my phobia while boarding and also I have a 30 dollar body board from Costco and it’s pretty high quality for its price I will definitely buy a higher quality soon tho

Good clip with a great message, bru. They're pretty much single-use bodyboards, especially when you've got some heavy dads truck-driving down a shorebreak.

These were all over the shops in Hawaii, it's a shame and surprising they don't stop selling them in such a beautiful place!

My dad bought me one of these boards when I was 8 years old, over 20 years ago. I still have that board in my loft, still in one piece. Purely because it's what started my love of bodyboarding. Going to start my little boy in the summer this year and will be buying him something decent to start with for sure.

Can you do a video discussing which is better, a bat tail or a crescent tail board? I have been riding the bat tail more than the crescent tail boards lately. But would like to hear your opinion especially for waves above 6ft. Thanks again for all the helpful videos

I remember my first board it had no stringer, back then I didn't know anything about it! Hurt my back on a 4-6ft day!

Well said Iain! Great video for those who are novices or uneducated on boogie boards or how cheaply some companies make them.

I decided it was time for a major upgrade! I just got myself a Science Veeks Hybrid 43. More board than I need? Possibly! But it was time to get a real one. No more cheapos for me!

I have the same Morey Boogie board I purchased more than 25 years ago and it's holding perfectly fine

Another point you missed out on is that cheap boards they last probably a maximum of 3 times going to the beach and using it. In the long term it is actually cheaper to buy a more advanced PP or PE core board because of how long it lasts (my PP lasted 5 years with constant use).
So if you keep buying cheap boards when they snap, the total amount spent on them will be more than what you spend on a regular PP or PE core in the future.

I have ridden PP and PE cores over the years. By far my fave core is NRG now. Perfect flex but also recoil/spring for UK water. As I understand it this is a low density PP. I have warped PE boards riding DK quite quickly but NRG seems to hold up really well to this.

I pulled mussels my back because I bought a cheap board that snapped in half in a big wave in Jersey. It snapped in half the front went down and my face hit the bottom and the wave carried my legs over to the point I think I felt my feet touch my head. One of the absolute wost beach accidents I got into when I was 14.
