Don't do what Vergil does guys. You're not Vergil and never be as cool as Vergil.

I've seen some characters in a video game I like sheath their swords slowly like this, and it has a certain coolness to it. It makes them seem calm and dignified even in the heat of battle.

And getting a replacement saya isn't cheap, those made in Japan are custom fitted to your particular blade.

Nobody has ever won a fight by being the fastest to sheathe their sword.

That's why we train with Bokutou and plastic Saya for years until drawing and sheathing are like breathing and walking.

When I go back to Kyoto I want to take your course! Sounds wonderful!

Yes, very important to maintain the saya and inspect it regularly. I had a friend several years ago, he was practicing draw cuts, and his Koiguchi had a catastrophic failure and split down the saya about 4 inches. The blade sliced and severed several nerves in his hand. Even after 5 years he didn't really recover, basically lost use of his thumb and pointer finger and had to give up multiple hobbies.

For those who keep struggling sheathing a katana consider this.

Most saya (sheaths) are designed to be worn on the left side, so the katana can be drawn with the right hand. As a result the knob known as the kurigata where the sageo is tied to is supposed to face outward. So whenever you sheath feel to make sure the kurigata is out.

This explains all the sheathing moves you see in many samurai movies where they often start fast and then slow down as their sword goes into their sheath.

This is the reason why I will never let anyone touch my sword.

European swords: usually have a metal edge to the sheath so it's more forgiving to having the sword being slammed into it when sheathing
Tourists: "what do you mean it's a different culture?!"

The sword might also cut its way through the sheath and into your hand if your not careful I’ve heard of this happening never seen it though.

Observed it & almost done it a few times in Iaido & Batto-do classes! Excellent advice for the katana crowd, especially as mentioned for zanshin! There is also a practical aspect, that is, the need to redraw while being 'attacked' during Noto! There is a kata in the Omori Ryu Iai set that highlights the double draw.

I might never wield a katana, but this is helpful nonetheless

When I was studying martial arts from the beginning, this was one of the things they initially stressed even before they give us a real sword with a sheath. This is why it's so important to learn martial arts from a professional.

i can't remember where i heard it, but i hear it's also a related concept to the idea of quickshot gunslingers holstering their weapon too quickly. "no one regrets putting their weapon away too slowly"

Wise advice! Now having coached 7-8 year old baseball for a couple of years I can tell you, reminders like “drop the bat after you swing _don’t_ throw it, drop it first, then run, ” are absolutely essential. When sheathing a katana in a dojo for the first time, who among us is not going to be a little like a 7-8 year old who just got his first base hit?

Next time I come to Japan, I'm singing up for your course! This looks great. Plus, I am a filmmaker and I'd love to do a short film on you and your work.

You can see the correct handling in pretty much every single media that contains Katana. Wether it's film, series or Anime. They always show how they slowly put the Katana back into the sheath
