Mercedes tries to cross Holy Island causeway as it floods

Holy Island or Lindisfarne is a tidal island off the northeast coast of England famous for it's monastery, castle and twice a day submerging causeway. Despite safe crossing signs and tide timetables every year on average about 10 cars get stuck on the flooded road between the mainland and the island.

Been going to Holy Island since the mid 1980's and always have respected the tides. The best thing of all about the tides though is when you stay on the Island when the tide is closing and everyone else leaves. The peace and quiet of the Island when the tide is in is pure heaven.❤

A friend of mine once told me that he'd seen a car get swept away by the strong tidal current; his wife then pointed out that the reason he was there to see it was that he'd only just made it himself!

My Late Father (architect) Designed and Built the Causeway ! Dennis Clark Slater -- Our Late Queen opened the Causeway -- he actually slept in the crow's nest over night to prove it was high enough!

Looks to me like he timed it to perfection and maintained a sensible speed/bow wave. In practice, the lower front bumper was as high as the water got. Hopefully it rained shortly thereafter and the cars underside was washed cleaned.

This video is a setup. The causeway is not flooding, the tide is going out which is why there is a queue of traffic waiting to cross. Several people have pointed out the dangers of ignoring the crossing time schedules, I've seen many ignore that and their car ruined as a result. I used to live up the road in Berwick.
