An Oriental Venice (1925) | BFI National Archive

Some deftly-applied stencil colouring adds to the extraordinary beauty of these scenes of canal cruising around Sanqiaopu in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China. The ‘water town’ was a popular stop-off for tourists on their way to the mountain resorts of Moganshan, and the scene pictured here - people's attire, the architecture - is typical of the Jiangnan (‘south of the Yangtze’) region of China.

Does this place still exist? Very good colour for it's time!

I'm guessing this is 三桥埠 (Sanqiaopu, or Three-Bridge Wharf) in Zhejiang Province. It's about 20 km east of Moganshan, a famous tourist destination for foreigners in China in the early 1900s.
