That Hopes and Dreams at 3:10 caught me off guard. In a good way! Now to go listen to the full oneshot opening.

What I like about this song in particular is that the lyrics convey a deeper context not usually seen in covers of DBG-
Mettaton choosing to stay is simultaneously selfless, and self-serving of them. While it is true that they do seem to genuinely care for their audience, it's shown that the battery in his EX-Form isn't power sustainable like his standard box form is. Even if he did manage to escape to the surface himself, they likely would not last long considering how much energy is required to sustain their new body. Also, it is highly unlikely that they would manage to amass a lasting cult-like following on the Surface, at least on their own without Alphy's assistance. This song, perfectly illustrates this notion; For Mettaton, as much as they "love" the attention and support afforded to them by their celebrity status, they also _need_ them.

To sum it up, it is better to rule in Hell, than lose yourself trying to reach Heaven. I think Mettaton, inspite of his ditzy and bimbo-like demeanor, was actually smart enough to realise this.
