Yunus on Hasina: She can call herself Bangladesh PM, reality differs | Talk to Al Jazeera

At the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh, addresses national and global challenges.

Following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid mass protests, Yunus faces the daunting task of uniting a fractured nation. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, he discusses the severe climate risks Bangladesh faces, political reforms needed to stabilise the country, and shifting diplomatic relations, particularly as Donald Trump, whom Yunus once criticised, returns to the White House.

With Bangladesh's future on the line, Yunus's leadership is being tested on multiple fronts.

In 53 years history of this ill-fated country, this is the first time such a qualified (internationally reputed) leader like Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus is leading the country as head of the interim government. We all know that July-2024 student’ movement against discriminatory government service quota system evolved to anti-discrimination student-peoples’ movement. People from all walks of life participated in that movement and fascist Hasina was bound to flee from the country. Farsighted coordinators of the movement have rightly chosen Prof. Yunus to lead the country. If we under his leadership fail to transform our country, that was made a vassal state of India by fascist Hasina, to a modern civilized country, it will be an unforgivable crime for all of us. This country can afford such failure no longer. We should all remember that this time there is no alternative to success.
