200, 000 Chinese immigrants may seem a lot but it still pales in comparison to the 600 million people of European descent living in North America, South America and Australia.

Panama is an immigration country from its creation. China has one fifth of the world's total population, so 5% of Panama population are of Chinese descendants does not look over represented.

so the chinese have been there working to make the panama canal since almost 200 years, but you still see them as chinese and not Panamanians. do you see black people as Panamanians or as Africans? what about the natives?

i was really surprised to see a large population of Chinese in Panama and also see local Panamanians enjoy the Chinese culture.

The difference between US and China:
- China brought infrastructure projects that is worth tens of millions of dollar and a generous trade deal to Panama during their visit.
- US brought warships and soldiers when they visited Panama. All US did was to warn Panama to stay far from China or risk getting sanctioned by US.

The Asian-descended people in Panama are Panamanian. Calling them “Chinese” is just wrong and arguably racist. They’re a part of Panama, and they are Spanish-speaking, just like all the other people of Panama that come from all over the world—whether you expect it or not!

And the Panamanian government just shifted recognition from Taipei to Beijing as the sole representative of China in the international community only in 2017 under former president Juan Carlos Valera and his chief diplomat+vice president Isabel de St. Malo.

There will be more room for engagement, consensus and cooperation between both sides in the years and decades to come like other Latin American countries which established ties with mainland China decades before.

I am overseas chinese in indonesia, here we have the largest population of chinese outside china...about 8 million, but only represent about 4% of indonesia population

Singapore have the largest percentage of chinese population at 75.9%

Malaysia have 22.5% of chinese population (7.5 million people)

You dont need to think too much about US or China. Panama should decide which investment is good based on his own interest, not others.

Like any place that's heavily invested in, whether it be resources or people, there tends to form a community of sorts around such endeavours. Not surprised it's happening in Latin America. Guess it gives diversity to such regions which can be a positive thing. Thanks Uptin!

This kind of title is very irresponsible and could flame anti Chinese sentiment. You are being extremely insensitive. If Chinese population is only 5%, it’s far from being a China. Both the black or white population is bigger than Chinese by population there, why don’t you title it is It “Panama or Africa?” Or “Panama or Spain?”

150 years! Wow, that's the whole history time of Canada. Panama is located quite close to the USA, yet very far from China.

I thought it was obvious. Because the United States had The Chinese Exclusion Act and Panamá needed to build a canal.
